96-06-03 Two OSU Faculty Receive Schoen Award TWO OHIO STATE FACULTY RECEIVE SCHOEN AWARD COLUMBUS -- Two Ohio State University faculty members will enhance their leadership and administrative abilities with the help of the 1996 Kathryn T. Schoen Award. Mary Thoesen Coleman of MARYSVILLE and E. Kay Halasek of COLUMBUS (43235) will receive their awards and cash honorariums at a ceremony June 5. Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee will make the presentations at 2 p.m. in his office, 205 Bricker Hall, 190 N. Oval Mall. Coleman is an assistant professor of family medicine. With her $2,000 Schoen Award, she will attend a symposium in Boston this summer on providing leadership for health care improvement. Coleman is especially interested in developing the use of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) to improve medical education. She also will meet with leaders in medical ducation. Halasek, an assistant professor of English, received $1,000, which she will use to attend a workshop and conference for the administrators of writing programs. The meetings will help Halasek prepare to direct Ohio State's First-Year Writing Program next spring. She also will refine a project to survey and interview students and faculty about successful college-level writing, and to hold a colloquium on the topic for high school officials and university administrators. Kathryn Schoen became the first woman vice president at Ohio State when she was appointed vice president for educational services in 1978. In more than 20 years of service, she gave her students and the university her greatest commitment and priority. She was known for giving others, especially women, opportunities for professional growth. This year, Kathryn Schoen and her husband, Richard, continued her tradition of setting an example for others by giving a donation to the Schoen Award fund.
