96-06-05 Battelle Scholars Named 13 STUDENTS NAMED BATTELLE SCHOLARS AT OHIO STATE COLUMBUS -- Thirteen outstanding high school seniors from Central Ohio have been awarded Battelle Memorial Scholarships to study at The Ohio State University. The merit-based awards provide the students with full tuition and has a current value of over $14,000, renewable for four years. The Battelle scholars were chosen because of their high academic achievement, leadership ability and their intent to pursue honors work at the college level. The scholarship was established in 1977 by the Battelle Memorial Institute Foundation at eight Central Ohio colleges and universities. Each school now maintains its own Battelle Scholars program. The program is designed to encourage students to develop and keep their talents in the community. Following is a listing, alphabetically by hometown, of the students who authorized release of their names. COLUMBUS: Elizabeth Gillespie is the daughter of Don and Susan Gillespie, 4337 Olentangy Blvd. (43214). She is a National Merit Scholar and valedictorian of Bishop Watterson High School. She plans to major in music education. Michael Gutridge is the son of Barbara and Curtis Gutridge, 4963 Comstack Drive (43232). He is a National Merit Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society. He plans to major in pre- medicine. Issac Mehl is the son of Eileen and Eric Mehl, 959 Spring Grove Lane (43235). He is a member of the National Honor Society and plans to major in biology. Ying Wang is the daughter of Jing Shu Wang, 510 Broadmeadows Blvd. (43214). She is a National Merit Scholar and plans to major in engineering. DUBLIN: John Wylie is the son of Nan and John Wylie, 7990 Sevenhill Court. He is a member of the National Honor Society, a National Merit Scholar and valedictorian of Worthington Kilbourne High School. He plans to major in engineering. PLAIN CITY: Kyle Weakley is the son of Connie and Doug Weakley, 10019 Hyland Croy Rd. He is a member of the National Honor Society and plans to major in pre-medicine. POWELL: Soraya Rofagha is the daughter of Sedigheh Keyhan and Shokrollah Rofagha, 1958 Strathshire Hall Lane. She is a National Merit Scholar and plans to major in pre-medicine. UPPER ARLINGTON: Alexandros Papaleonardos is the son of Holly and Dimitris Papaleonardos, 4440 Cassill St. He is a member of the National Honor Society and a National Merit Scholar. He plans to major in electrical engineering. WESTERVILLE: Catherine Bickley is the daughter of Linda and William Bickley, 5239 Longrifle Rd. She is a National Merit Scholar, and plans to major in mathematics and secondary education. Bruce Isler is the son of Linda and Richard Isler, 246 Alumwood Drive. He is a National Merit Scholar and plans to major in biomedical engineering. Mathew Shamis is a member of the National Honor Society and a graduate of Westerville South High School. He plans to major in actuarial science. WORTHINGTON: Kalyani Rammohan is the daughter of Bindu and K. W. Rammohan.
