EXPERIMENTAL CAR COMPETES IN FUTURECAR CHALLENGE--June 17-24. Ohio State is one of 12 finalists competing in the FutureCar Challenge in Dearborn, Michigan. The U.S Department of Energy sponsors the FutureCar Challenge as a way to challenge students to devise ways to double or triple fuel economy. The Buckeye entry features the only diesel-powered car in the field--a VW engine in a Chevy Lumina. The car and competition is part of the curriculum for students learning mechanical engineering at the Center for Automotive Research. Another experimental vehicle--the battery-powered Smokin' Buckeye, competes later this month. The Cold War, the Truman Doctrine, the nuclear arms race, the United Nations, Dixiecrats, the Rosenbergs and McCarthyism emerged onto the American political scene during the first eight years following the Second World War. The Search for International Security and Domestic Tranquility in Postwar America: The Truman Years, 1945-53, highlights these events. The exhibition is on display in the Main (Thompson) Library Philip Sills Exhibit Hall, 1858 Neil Ave. It features published works highlighting the events, challenges and opportunities facing President Harry Truman in the years following 1945.
