96-07-12 TRUSTEES: Trustees Appoint Deans, Directors, Chairs TRUSTEES APPOINT DEANS, DIRECTORS, CHAIRS COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees on Friday (7/12) appointed two deans and a director of the university press and filled an endowed chair. In addition, the board appointed or reappointed several chairs and directors. Hall named executive dean of Arts and Sciences Trustees appointed Kermit L. Hall, dean of the College of Humanities, to a concurrent position as executive dean of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences, retroactive to July 1 and continuing through June 1999. Hall succeeds James Garland, who became president of Miami University. A professor of history and law, Hall is a former Fulbright Scholar and serves on the five-member John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Review Board, a board charged with supervising the release of documents connected with the investigation of the assassination of President Kennedy. He is the author of several books on the history of law, the courts, and public life. Hall served as editor-in-chief of The Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court, which won numerous awards. Goodridge named dean of Biological Sciences Trustees appointed Alan Goodridge, professor and head of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Iowa, as dean of the College of Biological Sciences. Goodridge will begin his duties here Sept. 1. A widely published scholar in metabolism, endocrinology and molecular biology, Goodridge specializes in the molecular basis for nutritional and hormonal regulation of gene expression, metabolic regulation, and hormone action. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Tufts University in biology and his Master of Science and doctoral degrees in zoology from the University of Michigan. Goodridge was selected following a national search for a successor to Gary L. Floyd. The board reappointed Floyd, a resident of UPPER ARLINGTON, as acting dean through August. Floyd retired as dean in 1995, and came back shortly thereafter to serve until the post could be filled. Hanrahan to direct University Press The board appointed Barbara J. Hanrahan, editor-in-chief at the University of North Carolina Press, as director of The Ohio State University Press, retroactive to July 1. Hanrahan specializes in book acquisitions and publishing. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Wheaton College and her Master of Arts degree from the University of Chicago. Lambert named to Mason professorship Trustees appointed Douglas M. Lambert to the Raymond E. Mason Professorship in Transportation and Logistics, retroactive to July 1 and continuing through June 2001. Lambert comes from the University of North Florida where he held the Prime F. Osborn III Eminent Scholar Chair in Transportation and was a professor of marketing and logistics. He specializes in strategic planning and executive development. Lambert succeeds Bernard J. LaLonde, who has retired. Fyle specializes in the history and socioeconomic development of Sierra Leone. He has taught at Ohio State since 1991. -- Irene Masing-Delic of COLUMBUS (43201) as director of the Center for Slavic and East European Studies, through July 1997. Masing-Delic has taught at Ohio State since 1987 and specializes in Russian prose, criticism, poetry and culture. -- Douglas D. Southgate Jr. of WORTHINGTON as director of the University Center for International Studies, through July 1997. Southgate has taught at Ohio State since 1980 and specializes in environmental and natural resources economics. -- Albert J. Davis of UPPER ARLINGTON as chair of a new department formed by the merger of the Department of Family Relations and Human Development and the Department of Home Economics Education, retroactive to May 1 and continuing through April 1998. Davis has taught at Ohio State since 1988 and specializes in psychology and child development. -- Don M. Dell of COLUMBUS (43214) as director of a new school formed by the merger of the School of Journalism and Department of Communication, through June 1998. Dell has extensive administrative experience and specializes in counseling psychology. He has taught at Ohio State since 1971. -- Karen A. Lebow of PITTSBURGH as director of the Mershon Center, through June 2000. Lebow comes from the University of Pittsburgh where he was a professor of political science and public and international affairs. He specializes in conflict prevention and management, and bargaining and negotiation. -- Elizabeth G. Menaghan of UPPER ARLINGTON as chair of the Department of Sociology through June 2000. Menaghan specializes in women's and children's mental health and has taught at Ohio State since 1978. -- William W. Batstone, of COLUMBUS (43215) as chair of the Department of Classics, effective Oct. 1 and continuing through September 2000. Batstone specializes in Latin literature, ancient rhetoric and modern literary theory, and has taught at Ohio State since 1985. -- Bernd Fischer of UPPER ARLINGTON as chair of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures, beginning Oct. 1 and continuing through September 2000. Fischer has taught at Ohio State since 1982 and specializes in modern linguistics, literary theory and German prose forms. -- Isaac J. Mowoe as acting chair of the Department of Black Studies, through June 1997. Mowoe specializes in African politics and law and has taught at Ohio State since 1977. -- Stephen J.
