STUDENTS WELCOMED BACK TO SCHOOL WITH WEEK OF ACTIVITIES--Sept. 22- 28. Nearly 50,000 students converge on the Columbus campus beginning Sunday, Sept. 22, as Ohio State begins a new academic year on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Among the many "Welcome Week" activities. Sunday, Sept 22. Some 8,000 students will begin moving into residence halls. Students and parents go first to French Field House (west of St. John Arena) for registration and instructions. President Gee and senior univeristy officials will arrive at French Field House at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24. President Gee will welcome students with a convocation at 11 a.m. in St. John Arena, and continue at a picnic on the Oval at noon. Also at noon, a Campus and Community Involvement Fair will begin on the Ohio Union west lawn. From 8 to 10:30 p.m., students can dance at a Party in the Streets on 12th Avenue and College Road. Wednesday, Sept. 25. Classes begin. A Transportation and Parking Services Information Fair will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the West Campus bus stops. From 11 a.m.to 1 p.m. students can enjoy a picnic at the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center, and then go to the grand opening of Woody's Place, a campus gathering spot in the South Terrace of the Ohio Union , from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26. Students can take part in the All Campus Job Fair, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Ohio Union Ballrooms with more than 50 campus employers participating. Student can catch Scarlet Fever at a pep rally at St. John Arena at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27. Students can explore the activities offered by the Department of Recreation and Intramural Sports at a Sports Club Daze in Larkins Hall from 5 to 8 p.m. From 6 to 7 p.m., students can share a laugh at a Comedy Nite at the Hale Center, or learn about being a first year student at a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Ohio Union Main Lounge. Saturday, Sept. 28, students can take part in a speech and debate tournament at the Ohio Union from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. or go to a Unity Dance from 2 to 6 p.m. on the Ohio Union west lawn. Incoming MBA students at the Fisher College of Business will hear first-hand about the purchase by Ford Motor Co. of Jaguar Motors in a special presentation, Sept 24 and 25. Fifteen executives from Ford in Detroit will arrive on campus Tuesday--driving a small fleet of Jaguars--to explain the nuances and lessons of the automaker's marriage with the British car company. The Jaguars, along with Ford executive John Rickle, MBA Program Chair James Ginter and Finance Professor Tony Sanders, will be available Sept. 24 at noon on the sidewalk between the Oval and Hagerty Hall, 1775 College Rd. Focus on Quality: Working Together with Providers to Achieve Successful Outcomes is the topic of a one-day seminar sponsored by The Ohio State University Medical Center, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Columbus Marriot North, 6500 Doubletree Ave. The seminar will provide insurance case managers, utilization review nurses and discharge planners with information on defining, evaluating and improving health care quality. The keynote speaker is Dr. Bernadine Healy, dean of the College of Medicine, a nationally recognized expert on health care policy, and former director of the National Institutes of Health. Incoming MBA students at the Fisher College of Business will improve the quality of education at Indianola Middle School by beautifying the property and working with special needs children on organizational skills. Fulfilling a community service requirement of their orientation program, the 150 MBA students will landscape the property, build picnic and park benches and install new playground equipment to replace the playground that was destroyed last year in a suspicious fire. A $10,000 grant from Xerox Foundation provides equipment for the day-long event. The MBA orientation program emphasizes teamwork and leadership skills, social responsibility and community awareness. In conjunction with the Department of Art's visiting artist program, Rebekah Modrak and Diana Schoenfeld, photography; Greg Pitts, ceramics; and John Wigley, sculpture; will exhibit their work in Hopkins Hall Gallery, 128 N. Oval Mall, as part of the Visiting Artists/New Faculty exhibition. Also on exhibit are works by newly appointed faculty in the Department of Art. About 200 Ohio State University students are expected to participate in what has historically been the nation's largest College Fund/UNCF Walk-a- thon, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at Wolfe Park, East Broad at Nelson Rd. The 6.3 mile route takes walkers down East Broad St. to Columbus City hall and back to the park. In 1995, 3,754 walkers raised $204,750 in the Columbus walk-a-thon.
