COURSE EXAMINES 1996 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION--Tuesday nights through autumn quarter. Students in Columbus, Marion, Mansfield and Newark are learning about the upcoming election in a special 8-week political science course titled The 1996 Presidential Election. The course is taught in distance learning classrooms at the four campuses which are equipped with cameras and monitors. The instructor (Political Science Professor Herb Asher) lectures in person to 15 students in Columbus. His lecture is transmitted to his students at each of the other regional campuses. In the discussion that follows, students talk with Asher and each other by means of a voice-activated camera which turns to students as they ask questions and shows it to students at the other three sites. Students are required to watch various TV programs as part of their course material. The class does NOT meet on Election night. CONTACT: Herb Asher, Political Science, 292-0803. COLLEGE SENIORS INVITED TO GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL SCHOOLS-- Nov. 3-5. The 26th Annual Graduate and Professional Schools Visitation Days offers seniors from 54 colleges and universities a look at programs at Ohio State. Students arrive on campus with a completed application for admission to one of Ohio State's graduate or professional units, plus an application for fellowship or scholarship consideration. Sponsored by the Office of Minority Affairs, the event features a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 in the Ohio Union West Ballroom, 1739 N. High St. On Nov. 4, Students meet with academic unit representatives throughout the day. Also on Nov. 4, President Gee will speak to students at a 1:30 p.m. luncheon, and the students will be applauded at a Community Banquet at 6:30 p.m. Keynote speaker for the banquet is Julian Earls, deputy director of operations, NASA Lewis Research Center. Local artist Florestine Jones will speak at the Frank W. Hale, Jr. Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave, on the need to know the history and accomplishments of Black people, as well as the origins of slaves and their different destinations. Jones' presentation, 7-9 p.m., is titled My Brother, Who Are We? CONTACT: Michelle Cushnie, Hale Center, 292-0074. THEATRE DEPARTMENT OFFERS GOD'S COUNTRY--Through Nov. 16. The Department of Theatre kicks off its new season with a play by Steven Diets entitled God's Country. The play is based on the true story of the Denver murder of radio talk-show host Alan Berg in 1984 and chronicles the rise of the white-supremacist group The Order. The production will be staged at the Stadium II Theatre, Drake Union, 1849 Cannon Dr. CONTACT: Lois Foreman Wernet, College of the Arts, 292-8835. SPIRIT OF WOMEN ADDRESSES WOMEN'S HEALTH--Nov. 9. Spirit of Women, a day filled with entertainment and information for women of all ages, will focus on issues that affect women most--family, work and health. Sponsored by The Ohio State University Medical Center, Spirit of Women will be held at the Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Rd, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Medical Center was recently designated as one of only six National Center of Excellence in Women's Health by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to act as a national model for improving the health of American Women. Among the day's highlights: Attitudes with Wings, a play about the many facets of women's friendships. Following the play, three discussion groups will focus on balancing roles within the family; evaluating a career and managing stress; and proper body perception, nutrition and weight management. Writers from Ohio State's Creating Writing program will join a national effort to fight hunger by reading from their works along with 2,000 authors at other locations across the country in Share Our Strength's fifth annual Writers Harvest: The National Reading.
