97-03-20 Slane Named Trustee SLANE TO JOIN OHIO STATE BOARD OF TRUSTEES COLUMBUS -- Daniel M. Slane, a shopping center developer and attorney, will become the newest member of the Ohio State Board of Trustees. Gov. George V. Voinovich recently named Slane to a nine-year term beginning May 14. He will succeed Leslie H. Wexner, whose term will expire. Slane, 54, is founder and owner of The Slane Co., which develops, owns and operates 88 shopping centers and other commercial developments in 11 states. Headquartered in Columbus, the company has offices in Harrisburg, Pa., and Portland, Ore. He also is of counsel with the Columbus law firm Grieser, Schafer, Blumenstiel & Slane Co., L.P.A., of which he is a former partner. As a trustee, Slane said he will use his experience in business, finance and real estate construction to help further the work of Campus Partners, the organization working to revitalize the neighborhood just east of the Ohio State campus. "We are delighted with Gov. Voinovich's appointment of Dan Slane to the university's Board of Trustees," said President E. Gordon Gee. "In addition to his considerable business acumen and community involvement, Mr. Slane brings with him a long association with the university, having earned two Ohio State degrees. "He joins a strong, effective Board that has high aspirations and expectations for this university," Gee said. Slane came to Ohio State from New York on a wrestling scholarship and earned his B.S. degree in business administration in 1964 and his J.D. degree in 1967. He then served two years as a captain in the U.S. Army before receiving his M.A. degree in international law in 1970 from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. In the 1970s, Slane also served one year as an assistant prosecuting attorney for Franklin County and two years as a White House staff assistant to President Gerald Ford. "Being named to the Ohio State Board of Trustees is a privilege and honor," Slane said. "I come from a very poor background, and this university did many things for me. It is extremely gratifying to me to be able to give something back." Since 1990 Slane has served as chairman of the Ohio Building Authority, which finances, constructs and manages state buildings. He has also chaired the State Board of Building Appeals, which examines state building code variances, since 1991. He sits on the board of directors of the Ohio Capital Corp., which is developing $30 million worth of government- subsidized apartment projects in Ohio. In addition, Slane is a trustee of Hiram College, a liberal arts college in Hiram, Ohio, and a director of The Campus, a for- profit hospital group with facilities in Columbus and Cleveland. Slane and his wife, Lee, live in Blendon Township near Westerville. Their daughter, Julie, is a law student at Michigan State University. # Contact: William J.
