NCAA WOMEN GYMNASTS PERFORM--Apr. 5 The Ohio State women's gymnastics team will host the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at 6 p.m. at St. John Arena. The top seven teams in the region will compete, including the No. 1-seed Buckeyes. The field is: Massachusetts, Penn State, Kent, New Hampshire, Pittsburgh, and Rhode Island, seeded two through seven, respectively. Division I women's gymnastics is divided into five regions. EXPLORE THE DEADHEAD PHENOMENON--April 8. Dennis McNally, longtime publicist and official biographer for the Grateful Dead will present Working for the Dead: Why I Never Submitted A Resume” at 7 p.m. in the Drake Union Thurber Theatre, 1849 Cannon Drive. McNally’s dissertation, a biography of Jack Kerouac called Desolate Angel, was read by Jerry Garcia, who then invited him to become the Grateful Dead’s biographer in 1980. CAN JAPAN COPE WITH GLOBAL SUCCESS?--April 8. Japan’s move into the global economy is bringing many changes to the country. David Steigerwald, associate professor of history at The Ohio State University Marion spent last year as a Fulbright Scholar in Japan. He will present What Is the Price of Japan's Success? as part of the Learning Lunch Series at noon, 236 Morrill Hall at Marion, covering economics, crime, education, and the challenges put upon Japan's traditional closed society as its people are more exposed to the Western mass culture. In 1942 a squadron of Six P-38 Lightning and two B-17 Flying The crew was rescued, but the aircraft was abandoned and eventually buried by perpetual Greenland snow. Atlanta businessmen Pat Epps and Richard Taylor became infatuated with finding the aircraft of the lost squadron. They mounted seven expeditions, and finally in 1992 drilled down 80 m to the aircraft, and recovered one of them. Epps and Taylor learned much about polar expeditions and will offer two lectures about their adventures. They will present The Lost Squadron from noon- 1 p.m. in 240 Scott Hall, 1090 Carmack Rd, and Recovery of WWII Aircraft from 80m Deep in the Greenland Ice Sheet, 4-5 p.m. in 100 Mendenhall Lab, 125 S. Topics include legislative challenges to immigration, language and citizenship; literary readings; rethinking ethnicity, gender and culture; and a keynote address by Michael Olivas of the University of Houston, who will speak on “My Grandfather’s Cuentos from New Mexico: Critical Race Theory, LatCrit, and the Art of Storytelling” at 7 p.m. on Friday (4/11). The fifth annual Ohio Hispanic Conference will be held on Monday (4/14) and focus on Hispanic businesses, with a variety of workshops and roundtable discussions. Numerous other musical, cultural and informational events, and a series of Hispanic luncheons round out the week’s activities.
