97-04-04 Trustees: Personnel, Reports & Misc. ACTIONS OF THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees on Friday (4/4) appointed a professor in public policy, a director of the Schottenstein Center, and reappointed two deans at the regional campuses. The board also heard updates on the Office of Student Life review process and the vision of the College of Medicine, and conducted other business. Schiavo named to Enarson Professorship The board named Mary F. Schiavo to the Harold L. and Audrey P. Enarson Professorship in Public Policy, retroactive to Jan. 1 and continuing through December. She began her teaching assignments spring quarter. A former inspector general of the U.S. Department of Transportation with oversight authority over the FAA, Schiavo gained national attention for blowing the whistle on lax FAA enforcement and inspections and for revealing safety problems at ValuJet and other airlines. A native of northwest Ohio, Schiavo attended Ohio State University twice -- obtaining her pilot's license and completing her freshman and sophomore classes in 1973-74. She completed her bachelor's degree at Harvard and returned to Ohio State to earn a master's degree in public administration in 1977. She received her law degree from New York University in 1980. Schiavo has been named a White House Fellow and an OSU University Fellow. The Enarson Executive-in-Residence is an endowment initiated by former Ohio State President Harold Enarson -- who was a Professor of Public Policy and Management -- and his wife, Audrey. The Enarson Professorship is a position offered to a recognized professional with extensive government experience. Schiavo is the third Enarson Professor, succeeding former state budget directors Bill Shkurti and Lee Walker. Riggs appointed director of Schottenstein Center Trustees named Xen Michael Riggs as director of the Schottenstein Center, effective April 14. Riggs has been director of Assembly Hall at the University of Illinois since May 1995 and was the associate director from 1990 to 1995. He held previous positions as general manager of the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Mich., and as an auditorium manager at Illinois State University and Anderson University. Riggs will report to David Williams, vice president for student affairs, and work closely with the Department of Athletics to manage the center. An advisory board will set policy. Primary tenants of the Schottenstein Center will be men’s and women’s basketball and men’s ice hockey. Among his initial duties will be reviewing final architectural plans, creating a staffing plan and gradually assembling staff, fine-tuning the operating budget and creating event calendars for the first months after opening. The Schottenstein Center is currently under construction, with opening anticipated in Autumn 1998. Riggs is a 1982 graduate of Anderson University and is a member of numerous professional organizations. Reappointments Trustees reappointed: -- Violet I. Meek of LIMA as dean and director of The Ohio State University Lima Campus, effective July 1 and continuing through June 2002. Meek has served as dean and director of the Lima campus since 1992. -- John O. Riedl of MANSFIELD as dean and director of The Ohio State University Mansfield Campus, effective July 1 and continuing through June 2000. Riedl, also the coordinating dean of the four regional campuses, has served as dean and director of the Mansfield campus since 1987. Miller wins student recognition award -- Trustees awarded a student recognition award to Brenda Miller of MILFORD. A third-year student in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Miller was honored for her work in organizing the first student chapter of the American Association of Human Animal Bond Veterinarians. She also helped establish the college's Pet Loss Support Hot Line, a service that offers pet owners counseling for grief and guilt experienced through the loss of a pet. Board hears report on Student Life review The board heard a report by William Hall, assistant vice president for student affairs, and Kathy Cleveland Bull, acting director of Student Life, on a year-long review of the services and structure of the Office of Student Life. Cleveland Bull reported the review process involved four steps: an internal Student Life committee, external review, student assessment and community forums. The review outlined several goals for the unit including increasing visibility, impact and collaboration among units; improving customer service, retaining programming, consultation and advocacy, and developing an organization consistent with cutting-edge features with utility in the long term. To obtain these goals, the review process recommended restructuring the unit by eliminating the director’s position and the Office of Student Life, and replacing it with three clusters to include student activities, culture and ethnicity, and gender and sexual orientation. The Office of Student Judicial Affairs was recommended to become a separate office not directly connected to any one cluster. Cleveland Bull said the recommendations will not eliminate any constituency office but will enable the unit to better serve students with more efficient methods that will continue to meet all student needs. College of Medicine shares its vision for the future Bernadine Healy, dean of the College of Medicine, shared with trustees her vision for the future of the college. Healy detailed a five-level approach for improvement: creating more urgency about opportunities, making shifts in the culture of the college, creating a strategy for centers of excellence, pushing for quality and quantity, and raising additional money. She also enumerated five goals for the college: enhancing academics, integrating the clinical enterprise, continuing focus on the School of Public Health, adding meaningful affiliations and alliances, and improving organization and administration.
