CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM HONORED--April 16. An Ohio State University Police program that took campus crime prevention and safety messages to more than 12,000 Ohio high school students last year has been named Outstanding Ohio Crime Prevention Project by the Ohio Crime Prevention Association (OCPA). Officers will receive the OCPA award at a lunch ceremony from noon-2 p.m. at the Windham Hotel (formerly Stouffers in Dublin), 1600 Metro Place North. OSU officers traveled to 91 high schools across the state in 1996 to spread campus safety messages. The program, started here in 1991, has become so popular that other university police departments are asking to help expand it. Also at the lunch, the OCPA is expected to announce a new scholarship and a new annual service award named for slain OSU Police Officer Michael Blankenship, who was very active in crime prevention and the OCPA. Despite advances in almost every field of medicine, errors continue to enter the equation, causing problems for health care workers and patients. The Medication Use Process: Error Prevention and Reducing Adverse Drug Events is the topic of the annual Ohio Pharmaceutical Seminar, sponsored by The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. Many nationally recognized speakers will speak on topics that include: defining, reducing and eliminating medication errors, and the roles pharmacists can play in reducing medication errors and finding ways to correct problems in the medication use system. A week-long celebration of Hispanic culture includes conferences, workshops, cultural and informational events and a series of Hispanic luncheons. Topics include legislative challenges to immigration, language and citizenship; literary readings; rethinking ethnicity, and gender and culture. The fifth annual Ohio Hispanic Conference will be held on Monday (4/14) and focus on Hispanic businesses, with a variety of workshops and roundtable discussions. HENRY LEE TO SPEAK AT OHIO STATE MARION-- April 17-18. The scientist who gained national attention for his defense testimony at the O.J. Simpson trial, his investigative work in Bosnia and this year for his work on the JonBenet Ramsey murder investigation will present Death Investigations, Crime Scene Preservation and Expert Testimony, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Marion campus. Lee’s speech is the fourth in the Fellows in Criminal Justice seminar series at Ohio State Marion The Fellows series is aimed at professionals in law enforcement and related careers such as social work. The upcoming seminar will also be of interest to attorneys, particularly Lee's session on expert testimony that focus on the criminal justice system. Storytellers, workshops, information tables from 30 community groups, hands-on ecology activities, lots of music and a dance event highlight the 1997 Earth Day celebration. The University-supported public radio station kicks off its 75th anniversary celebration with a News 820 Open House, 1-6 p.m. at the WOSU Studios, 2400 Olentangy River Rd. Originally on the air as WEAO in 1922, WOSU-AM News 820 holds the big birthday bash on April 24, with day-long programming that includes recreation of its first regular broadcast, a time capsule dedication, and special excerpts from the station archives. Students interested in becoming an optometrist or simply learning more about the profession are invited to an open house from 1-4 p.m. at The Ohio State University College of Optometry, 338 W. 10th Ave. The facility includes 58 exam rooms and nine state-of-the-art eye care specialty clinics. The open house includes tours, a chance to talk with faculty and current students, and information about admissions and financial aid. CANOE ON THE SCENIC OLENTANGY--The Drake Union Marina will be opening for spring on Saturday and Sunday, April 19-20, from 1- 6 p.m As part of the grand opening, canoeing will be half price ($1.50 per person per hour). The marina is located on the lower level of the Drake Union at 1849 Cannon Drive. Ohio State University employees are invited to Take a Daughter to Work on Thursday, and introduce children to a range of exciting careers. Participants may try their hand at creating their own Web home page, lifting fingerprints off objects, or helping a chimpanzee learn to count. Learn what it takes to become a veterinarian, social worker, mathamatician, lawyer, photographer, farmer or curator. Girls and boys, ages 9-17 may attend any of the free workshops around campus, taught by faculty and staff volunteers. Several hundred children are expected to particpate. Workshops are offered from 9:30-11:00 a.m., 1:00-2:30 p.m. and 3-4 p.m. Take Our Daughters to Work is a national program established by the Ms. Foundation. At Ohio State, the day is sponsored by the University Career Services Committee and the Association of Faculty and Professional Women. Business owners or executives of public agencies can learn about the changing telecommunications environment at a one- day conference at the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St. The Changing Telecommunications Environment: A Forum for Small and Medium Businesses and Public Organizations offers businesses and organizations which do not have the ability to hire consultants or retain technical staff information and recommendations about dealing with the fundamental changes now occurring in telecommunications. Topics include: The Players, Rules and Games, The Telecommunications Act of 1996, and Future Services and Architectures. The forum is sponsored by the Center for Advanced Study in Telecommunications (CAST) at Ohio State, the McClure School of Communication Systems Management at Ohio University, and the National Regulatory Research Institute at Ohio State.
