97-05-02 Trustees: Alex Shumate is new Chair ALEX SHUMATE ELECTED TO CHAIR BOARD OF TRUSTEES COLUMBUS -- Alex Shumate, a partner in the international law firm of Squire, Sanders and Dempsey and managing partner of the firm’s Columbus office, was elected chair of The Ohio State University Board of Trustees on Friday (5/2). He succeeds Leslie H. Wexner, whose nine-term as a trustee ends on May 13. Shumate is completing his eighth year as a trustee. As chair, Shumate will lead the board of a university with an annual budget of $1.5 billion and the largest single-campus enrollment in the country. Ohio State has about 55,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students, including more than 48,000 on the Columbus campus. Shumate is vice-chair of the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce and vice-chair of the Governing Committee of the Columbus Foundation. He is director of Banc One Corp.; Bank One, Columbus, NA; and Intimate Brands Inc. His legal practice focuses on business regulatory, legislative counseling and public law matters. The board elected Theodore S. Celeste, a Columbus businessman, as vice chair. Celeste is president of Celeste & Allerdyce Real Estate Inc., a real estate brokerage firm in Grandview Heights He formerly was chairman and president of Advanced Interactive Video Inc. He is a member of the Columbus Board of Realtors, the National Association of Realtors and First Community Church in Marble Cliff. Re-elected were William J. Napier as secretary and James L. Nichols as treasurer. And joining the board next month as new appointees of Gov. George V. Voinovich are Daniel M. Slane, a Franklin County businessman, and Soraya Rofagha of Powell. Slane will replace Wexner on the board and Rofagha will replace Holly A. Smith as the undergraduate student trustee. The board also approved several appointments to board committees and representatives to other university-affiliated boards and commissions. The appointments are as follows: Educational Affairs Committee: George A. Skestos, chair; Michael F. Colley, vice chair; Zuheir Sofia and Mark E. Berkman. Student Affairs Committee: Tamala Longaberger Kaido, chair; Berkman, vice chair; Slane and Rofagha. Fiscal Affairs Committee: Celeste, chair; David L. Brennan, vice chair; James F. Patterson and Longaberger Kaido. Investments Committee: Brennan, chair; Patterson, vice chair; Skestos, John G. McCoy and Frank Wobst. McCoy and Wobst are members of The Ohio State University Foundation Board. Agricultural Affairs Committee: Patterson, chair; Fred L. Dailey, vice chair, ex officio; and Slane. Affiliated Entities Committee: Shumate, chair; Skestos, vice chair; Celeste and Sofia. University Hospitals Board: Skestos and Sofia. The Arthur G.
