97-05-09 Essence Editor Is Heritage Festival Keynote ESSENCE MAGAZINE EDITOR SUSAN TAYLOR TO SPEAK AT OHIO STATE COLUMBUS -- Essence Magazine editor-in-chief Susan Taylor will speak Tuesday (5/13) at 7 p.m. in the Ohio Union Ballrooms, 1739 N. High St., at the kickoff ceremonies for The Ohio State University’s African American Heritage festival May 13-17. Taylor will present a lecture on finding and utilizing career opportunities and answer questions during an open- microphone session. The author of In the Spirit, Lessons in Living and Confirmation: The Spirit Wisdom that has Shaped our Lives, Taylor is the senior vice president of Essence Communications. Under her leadership, Essence magazine increased its monthly circulation to 5.1 million readers. She was the host and executive producer of Essence, a nationally syndicated magazine television show that ran for four seasons in more than 60 U.S. markets and in several Caribbean and African countries. Taylor earned her undergraduate degree from Fordham University and holds honorary doctorates from Lincoln University and the University of Delaware. She is the recipient of the 1992 First Person Award from the New York City Mission Society and serves on the advisory board of Aid to Imprisoned Mothers. Admission for the lecture is $5 with university identification, and $8 without. Tickets can be purchased at the Ohio Union newsstand and at the door. Other activities for the week-long festival include: -- A poetry slam Wednesday (5/14) in the Ohio Union Ballrooms, at 7 p.m. Admission is $2. -- A gospel festival Thursday (5/15) featuring several local choirs and soloists, in the Ohio Union Ballrooms at 7 p.m. Admission is free. -- Crafts bazaar with a variety of Afrocentric art, T- shirts, clothing and jewelry (5/15) from 12 to 6 p.m. at the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave., and May 16-17 from 12 to 6 p.m. on the west lawn of the Ohio Union. -- A jazz and artist reception Friday (5/16) in the Ohio Union Main Lounge from 2 to 4 p.m. The reception will feature music by local musicians and a tour of the Exposures Art Gallery on the 2nd floor of the Ohio Union. Admission is free. -- The Heritage Festival Saturday (5/18) from 12 to 7 p.m. on the west lawn of the Ohio Union. It will feature gospel music, poetry, jazz, a fashion show, and a greek organizations step show. Admission is free. -- A picnic Sunday (5/18) from 2 to 6 p.m on the Oval with food, music and games.
