SEMINAR EXAMINES TRADE PROSPECTS IN EASTERN EUROPE--June 3. Business and trade specialists will offer advice and information at a one-day seminar titled Russia, Poland and the Czech Republic: Prospects for Trade and Investment, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Rd. The event is designed for Ohio business people and investors who are either considering or have already established trade or investment ties in one or more of the three countries. Speakers include investment bankers, manufacturers and lawyers; trade representatives of the three governments, and representatives of U.S. agencies designed to facilitate trade and investment in eastern Europe. HUMANITIES CEREMONY FEATURES JULIAN BOND AND R.L. STINE --June 5. Civil rights leader and statesman Julian Bond will speak at the College of Humanities Baccalaureate,which begins at 4 p.m. in Weigel Hall, 1866 College Road. The college’s annual celebration of the achievements of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, will also honor two famous alumni: author Robert L.(R.L.) Stine and historian W. Marvin Dulaney. Bond has been an active participant in the movements for civil rights, economic justice, and peace, and is an aggressive spokesman for the disinherited. Bond will meet with reporters Thursday, 11:15-11:45 a.m. in 156 University Hall, 230 North Oval Mall. Dulaney and Stine will receive the fourth annual Humanities Alumni Society (HUMAS) Alumni Awards of Distinction for their outstanding personal and professional achievements and for having brought distinction to the college. Stine, a native of Bexley who earned a B.A. in English in 1965, is the author of the Goosebumps and Fear Street series of children’s novels and considered the most successful writer of fiction at work in America today. Dulaney, who earned an M.A. in 1974 and Ph.D. in 1984 in history, is the director of the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture and Director of African American Studies at the College of Charleston, South Carolina. CONTACT: Shari Lorbach, College of Humanities, 292-1882. CONFERENCE TO EXAMINE NEW FEDERAL AIR QUALITY STANDARDS--June 5- 6 Does midwestern pollution migrate to the Northeastern U.S.? How will proposed changes in the Clean Air Act affect air quality and health? Experts from government, industry and academia will discuss the impact of new federal air quality regulations and the science and public policy issues behind them at a meeting at the Wexner Center for the Arts, 1871 N. High St. At the center of the discussion are proposed changes to the federal Clean Air Act that are scheduled to begin in July. The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday (6/5) and is divided into four half-day technical sessions. It is sponsored by Ohio State and the Ohio EPA, in collaboration with the PUCO, the Columbus Health Department, the U.S. Geological Survey and American Electric Power Co.
