97-06-05 Kids Camps Offered at OSU CAMP PROVIDES DISCOVERIES AND ADVENTURE FOR KIDS AT OHIO STATE COLUMBUS -- Kids ages 5 and older can have fun this summer learning life skills, building self confidence and developing leadership abilities at a Buckeye Discoveries Recreational Camp at The Ohio State University, June 27 through August 28. Taught by Ohio State students and staff with backgrounds in child development and teaching, and local area teachers, the camps offer age-appropriate activities that encourage physical, social, emotional and intellectual growth. "This is an alternative program for school-aged kids, to teach them to lead healthy lives and get them away from in front of the TV. Also it encourages them to be physically active," said Tammy Wharton, program coordinator in the Department of Recreational Sports. "It's an opportunity for the general public to learn what Ohio State is all about, to use our facilities and see what we have to offer." Based in part on a similar program at the University of California at Los Angeles, the program offers two kinds of camps, a Buckeye Kids Camp and a Buckeye Specialty Camp, each a week in duration. The Kids Camp is a full-day program and is divided into three age groups: 5- and 6-year-olds; 7- through 9-year-olds; and 10- through 12-year-olds. Activities such as basketball, volleyball, tennis, soccer, drama, arts and crafts, nature and fitness, and martial arts are offered for all age groups. The older groups participate in field trips to the Columbus Zoo, Olentangy Indian Caverns, the Ohio Historical Society and the Center of Science and Industry (COSI). The younger group will participate in on-campus field trips to the Wexner Center and the university's planetarium. Cost for the camp is $185 per week, with a 10 percent discount offered for those who sign up for 4 or more weeks. Camp hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with extended morning and evening hours at no additional costs. The camps are held at various locations throughout campus, but headquartered at the Jesse Owens South Recreation Center, 175 W. 11th Ave. The Specialty Camps include horseback riding for ages 8 and older; scuba diving for ages 12 and older; in-line skating for ages 8 and older; and a dance and cheerleading camp for grades 2 to 12. The times of each camp vary between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and cost between $100 to $300 per week. Locations also vary. Registration for the camps are on a first-come basis and can be made by calling 292-7671. # Contact: Tammy Wharton, program coordinator, recreational sports, (614) 292-7671.
