97-06-05 Sandra Mamrak Receives Leadership Award SANDRA MAMRAK WINS WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP AWARD COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University’s Association of Faculty and Professional Women has presented its annual leadership award to Sandra Mamrak of COLUMBUS (43201), professor of computer and information science and allied medical professions. Mamrak recently received the second annual Mary Ann Williams Leadership Award in recognition of her efforts on behalf of diversity and student mentoring. “Dr. Mamrak has shown her special leadership skills in many sectors of the university,” said Marcia Gibson, chair of the selection committee. Mamrak has attracted students from many backgrounds to her team, who support an information system for brain tumor researchers in the United States. Students in the last five years have been African American, Hispanic, Chinese, German and Indian. “Dr. Mamrak has promoted an open and accepting climate, and encourages students to respect others,” Gibson said. Mamrak also works with faculty and staff in the Department of Computer and Information Science to promote an appreciation of the contributions of each person. She raises the consciousness of others across campus by pointing out the need to actively seek women from the national pool of female candidates. “As Mary Ann would say, Dr. Mamrak has ‘the chutzpah and the heart to squeeze laughter out of life,’” Gibson said. The award honors the late Mary Ann Williams, an associate professor of theatre, communication and black studies whose own promising career was cut short by an aneurysm in 1991. Mamrak received a certificate and a copy of Williams’ book, Aunt Ida. # Contact: Sandra Mamrak, (614) 292-2770 or mamrak.1@osu.edu Marcia Gibson, (614) 292-6761 or gibson.4@osu.edu [Submitted by: Von Vargas (vargas.12@osu.edu) Thu, 5 Jun 1997 14:52:46 -0400 (EDT)] All documents are the responsibility of their originator.
