CANCER SURVIVORS DAY CELEBRATION--June 8. Physicians, nurses and staff of The James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute will reunite with former patients and their families during the annual Picnic with the Docs from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the 9th Avenue parking garage, level 5. The annual reunion, which commemorates National Cancer Survivors Day 1997, will feature the Alumni Band and a keynote address from cancer survivor Herbert Newton, M.D., a neurology professor at The James. Students are expected to spend much of the week studying as they prepare for final exams for spring quarter classes. Following their last exam, many students head back to their hometowns for summer jobs. For others, summer quarter begins June 23. GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES PROGRAM THAT TEACHES BUSINESS CHINESE-STYLE-- June 10. Americans will find it easier to do business in China, thanks to US/China Links, a new program that offers members of the American business community an intensive education in Chinese language and corporate culture. To be inaugurated in July, US/China Links will be directed and taught by several Ohio State professors, including Galal Walker, director of the university’s National Foreign Language Resource Center and the prime mover behind the project. During July and August, participants will study Chinese language and culture at Yantai University, the College of Humanities’ institutional partner in the People’s Republic of China. Then they will become interns in a Chinese enterprise, where they will learn to do business Chinese-style. The program will also enable several Ohio State students to gain first-hand knowledge of Chinese business through an internship program coordinated by the National Foreign Language Resource Center. US/China Links is coordinated by the National Foreign Language Resource Center, the U.S. China Education Council, and Yantai University. Governor Voinovich announce the program at a news conference at 1:20 p.m. in his cabinet room. Several university administrators and students will be there, along with the Consul General from the China Consulate in New York City. Commencement exercises for some 5,300 spring quarter graduates will be held June 13 in Ohio Stadium beginning at 9:30 a.m. The commencement speaker will be Bob Greene, syndicated columnist for the Chicago Tribune. Greene, who grew up in Bexley, has written 17 books and appears in more than 200 papers. Looking for a commencement feature story? Following the ceremony, students and their famlies are invited to pose for photographs with President Gee on the steps of Larkins Hall (east of the closed end of the stadium).
