ACTIONS OF THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees on Friday (6/6) appointed an associate provost, an interim dean, two department chairs and reappointed an acting dean and department chairs. Trustees appointed two students to regional campus boards, heard a report on the quality of the student experience, and conducted other business. Davis named associate provost for University Technology Services Trustees appointed James F. Davis of POWELL as associate provost and director of University Technology Services, effective July 1. Davis, who has been serving in this role as in an interim capacity since July 1995, is also a professor of chemical engineering. Davis is responsible for academic and administrative technology support operations, including the university’s centrally supported computing facilities and information systems. University Technology Services has an annual budget of $19 million and a staff of 250 regular employees and more than 250 student employees. Under his directorship, UTS implemented a strategic planning process with three goals: focusing on services and technology solutions oriented toward instruction and research; supporting campus information sharing; and providing stable services while responding quickly to changing needs. Davis, who joined the Ohio State faculty in 1983 is an internationally recognized researcher in the field of intelligent information systems used in process and manufacturing systems. He has been a leader in several College of Engineering initiatives, including design and implementation of the college’s instructional computing plan and a revision of the credit hour requirements for funded graduate students. He has received numerous awards for both research and teaching. Davis received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1974. His master’s degree and Ph.D., also in chemical engineering, are from Northwestern University, in 1978 and 1981. Medeiros named interim dean of human ecology The board named Denis M. Medeiros of WORTHINGTON, an associate dean and professor of human nutrition, as interim dean of the College of Human Ecology, effective July 1 and continuing through June 30, 1998. Medeiros specializes in heart disease and nutrition, and has taught at Ohio State since 1989. Medeiros will replace current dean Jerelyn Schultz, who will return to the faculty. A registered dietitian, Medeiros earned his bachelor of science degree from Central Connecticut State College, his master’s degree from Illinois State University and his doctoral degree from Clemson University. In 1992, he was a recipient of the Success Story Award for contributions to multicultural teaching at Ohio State and named a PEW National Nutrition Faculty Scholar. Medeiros is a member of the American Institute of Nutrition, the American Dietetic Association and the International Association of Bioinorganic Scientists. Board appoints two chairpersons The board appointed: -- Donna Long of UPPER ARLINGTON, an associate professor of Spanish and Portuguese, as acting chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, retroactive to April 1, and continuing through Aug. 31. Long specializes in second language acquisition and listening comprehension, and has taught at Ohio State since 1984. -- Kathryn A. Jakes of UPPER ARLINGTON, a professor of consumer and textile science, as interim chair of the Department of Consumer and Textile Science, effective July 1 and continuing through June 30, 1998. Jakes specializes in the identification and characterization of fibrous polymers, and has taught at Ohio State since 1987. Reappointments The board reappointed: -- Robert Gold of UPPER ARLINGTON as acting dean of the Department of Mathematical and Physical Science, effective July 1 and continuing through June 30, 1998. -- Bonnie J. Garvin of DUBLIN as chair of the Department of Adult Health and Illness Nursing, effective Oct. 1 and continuing through Sept. 30, 2001. -- Nancy Ryan-Wenger of COLUMBUS (43214) as chair of the Department of Community, Parent-Child and Psychiatric Nursing, effective Oct. 1 and continuing through Sept. 30, 2001. Students named to Marion and Mansfield boards Trustees appointed Teresa Godby of MANSFIELD as a student member of The Ohio State University Mansfield campus board, through June 1998. A senior majoring in social work, Godby is a merit scholar and a gymnastics instructor and coach for Mid Ohio Gymnastics. The board appointed Jacqueline E. Marsano of MARION as a student member of The Ohio State University Marion campus board, through June 1998. A senior majoring in communications, Marsano works as an assistant workplace facilitator in the George H. Alber Enterprise Center. Levine wins student recognition award The board awarded a student recognition award to Mara Levine of ORANGE. A graduating senior majoring in occupational therapy, Levine was honored for her work as the undergraduate representative to the President's Council and as a student member of the Hillel Board of Trustees. She was named a 1997 Outstanding Senior and is a recipient of the Edward S. "Beanie" Drake Scholarship and the 1996 Conaway Chase-Outstanding Greek Senior Award. Board hears a report on quality of student experience Trustees heard a report from David Williams, vice president for student affairs, on issues that will be addressed by the Office of Student Affairs for the coming academic year. Williams said an additional staff member has been hired to coordinate continued implementation of recommendations from the Committee on the Undergraduate Experience in order to continue to enhance the student experience at Ohio State. He said efforts were underway to make the student experience more personal, including improvements to student orientation and adding more activities to welcome students to Ohio State during the first week of fall quarter. Emeritus titles granted Trustees granted emeritus titles to: -- Melvin N. Greenball of WORTHINGTON, professor emeritus of accounting and management information systems, retroactive to April 1. -- Charles E. Herdendorf of HURON, professor emeritus of zoology, retroactive to May 1. -- Joan M. Krauskopf of COLUMBUS (43214), professor emeritus of law, retroactive to June 1. Resolution in memoriam The board adopted a resolution in memoriam for Linnea Anderson, associate professor emeritus of allied medicine, who died April 16. Board accepts 13 named endowed funds Trustees heard a report from Jerry May, vice president for development, who reported gift receipts totaling $73,695,122 received through April, with a 67 percent increase in gift giving from associations and non-corporate organizations compared to the same period last year, with a total of $3,174,717 received. May reported the establishment of 13 new named endowed funds with gifts totaling $1,291,921. Approved by the board were: -- Endowed Chair in Peace Studies Fund, $596,251, for the Mershon Center for Education. -- The Everett D. Reese Arthritis Research and Education Fund, $350,000. -- The Medical Alumni Society Future Fund, $75,000. -- The Carmen Ohio Fund for The Ohio State University Men’s Glee Club, $26,866. -- The Clarence “Clancy” A. Isaac Jr. Block “O” Leadership Award, $25,824. -- The Pierre Astier Memorial Research Fund, $18,865, for doctoral students whose dissertation is devoted to 20th century French literature. -- The Ross County Alumni/Betty and Robert Jones Scholarship Fund, $16,875 for Ross County High Schools graduates. -- The Isabel Miller Scholarship in Early Childhood Education, $16,320. -- The Greater Cleveland Alumni Scholars Endowment Fund, $15,375. -- The Howard and Sally Seeds Scholarship Fund, $75,000, for graduates of Boardman High School. -- The William M. and Barbara Y.
