COMMENCEMENT CANCELED FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1941. Friday the 13th, 1997, marks the first time in 56 years that rain forced the cancellation of Ohio State’s spring quarter commencement exercises at Ohio Stadium. The ceremony was canceled following a 40 minute deluge that began just as students began filing into the stadium. Ten minutes after the ceremony began, President Gee instructed the 5,519 graduates to pick up their diplomas to pick up their diplomas across the street from the stadium in French Field House. The crowd never got to hear the commencement speech by Bob Greene, a native of Bexley and syndicated columnist for the Chicago Tribune. Because so many students graduate in the spring ceremony, it cannot be moved to an inside location because there is no place big enough to accommodate the crowd.
