97-06-13 Three Receive New Award for Faculty Service THREE RECEIVE NEW AWARD FOR FACULTY SERVICE COLUMBUS -- Whether it was increasing faculty involvement in university governance, leading numerous committees, or providing a vision for the physical environment, the first three recipients of a new Ohio State University award for faculty service have each given unstintingly of their time to the benefit of the entire university community. In recognition of the significant impact they have had on the quality of the university, the Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service has been bestowed on Harry P. Allen, professor of mathematics; W. Randy Smith, professor of geography; and Paul E. Young, professor of architecture. Each received a cash award of $3,000 and a $1,200 increase in his base salary. “Ohio State has long honored those faculty whose teaching and research efforts are well above the standard; it is fitting that we also have similar recognition for those whose service to the university is of equally significant caliber,” said President E. Gordon Gee. “I am delighted to announce the first recipients of this new award. Each of them has contributed enormously to the university community.” An advisory committee representing the offices of the president and provost, the University Senate and the Faculty Council selected the recipients on the basis of their documented impact and extensive contributions to the development and implementation of university policies and programs, as well as their leadership roles in university committees. Nominees must also show evidence of effective teaching and an active program of research or other creative work. 1997 Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service Harry P. Allen of WORTHINGTON, professor of mathematics. Allen has served with distinction on a variety of universitywide committees. He is best known for his dedicated and successful efforts to strengthen faculty governance at Ohio State. He served as chair of the Faculty Council of University Senate from 1993-95, and under his leadership the bylaws were rewritten, the Faculty Cabinet was formed and the council met regularly to discuss significant governance issues. For example, under his leadership the Faculty Council played a pivotal role in the comprehensive revision of the Faculty Rules pertaining to promotion and tenure. Allen continues to advise and counsel colleagues on faculty governance matters and to devote much time, energy and talent to faculty involvement in university governance. W. Randy Smith of DUBLIN, professor of geography. Smith has had an impact on almost every area of the university through his energetic and broad-ranging service. Through the Ohio Board of Regents, he was a key figure in developing and implementing better articulation between the state’s two- and four-year universities, allowing students to transfer credits more efficiently. He also helped the Regents in developing guidelines to implement the legislatively mandated increase in faculty teaching loads. On campus, he has been involved in such projects as the regional campus performance reviews, enrollment planning, academic enrichment approach to program funding, and improvement and cost-savings in health care programs. He has served, usually as chair, on nearly every major university committee and on numerous search committees. Smith has also been recognized with the university’s highest award for teaching, the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching. Paul E. Young Jr. of COLUMBUS (43202), professor of architecture. Young has been a tireless advocate for a high quality physical environment for the campus. He has consistently been a vocal and influential voice in both formal and informal discussions over the years, including two accreditation reviews, where the campus physical environment has been the object of study. He is most recognized for providing the guiding vision in the recently completed update of the university’s master plan. Young’s vision creates a sense of place through a physical environment that enhances the learning experience. His contributions will have an impact on future generations of students and faculty. # Contacts: Harry Allen, (614) 292-7652 Randy Smith, (614) 292-0178 Paul Young, (614) 292-9062 [Submitted by: Von Vargas (vargas.12@osu.edu) Fri, 13 Jun 1997 11:54:10 -0400 (EDT)] All documents are the responsibility of their originator.
