THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES--July 11. The Board will hold its regular July meeting at 10:45 a.m. in the Alumni Lounge of the Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Road. Committee meetings, where most of the discussion takes place, begin at 9 a.m. Among the items: discussion of the process for selecting a new president, the 1997-98 tuition increase, the university budget, and creation of the Ergonomics Institute. CONTACT: Ruth Gerstner, University Communication, 292-8424. YOUNG SCHOLARS ON CAMPUS FOR SUMMER LEARNING-through July 13. More than 300 high school students are spending the next two weeks on campus as part of the Summer Institute component of Ohio State’s Young Scholars Program. While on campus, the 334 Scholars will attend classes, live in residence halls and take part in career exploration within Ohio State’s 19 colleges. They will take classes in math, science, computers, art, English, music and foreign language. The Young Scholars Program gives first generation college-bound Ohio minority students a college education at little or no cost to the students. Young Scholars are guaranteed admission to Ohio State, along with financial aid, if they successfully complete the program through high school graduation with a 3.0 grade point average or better in a college preparatory curriculum. Beginning July 6, the Summer Institute is hosting an orientation week for 150 incoming college freshmen who have successfully completed the program. SMOKIN’ BUCKEYE RACES IN CLEVELAND--July 10-13. The Ohio State University Formula Lightning electric race team will attempt another victory at the Cleveland Formula Classic, held in conjunction with the PPG CART World Series Grand Prix of Cleveland. The battery powered car, designed and built by engineering students at Ohio State and driven by Craig Taylor, won its last race and now leads the ABB University Spec Series. The OSU Chadwick Arboretum in cooperation with the Columbus Museum of Art offers a lecture by landscape architect, author and instructor John Brookes from 10 a.m.-noon at the Columbus Museum of Art, 480 E. Broad St. Brookes, from the Clock House School of Garden Design in West Sussex, England, is author of Home and Garden Style and Book of Garden Design.
