97-07-08 Koroscik Named Dean of Arts JUDITH KOROSCIK NOMINATED TO HEAD COLLEGE OF THE ARTS COLUMBUS -- Judith Smith Koroscik has been nominated as dean of the College of the Arts at The Ohio State University. Richard Sisson, senior vice president and provost, announced Tuesday (7/8) that he will recommend Koroscik to President E. Gordon Gee and the university's Board of Trustees for a five-year, renewable appointment as dean. Subject to trustee approval, her appointment will be effective on Aug. 1. "Her teaching and scholarly credentials are highly regarded, and she has a proven track record as an extremely able administrator in an academic institution and center for the arts,” Sisson said. “After an extensive national search, we found that Dr. Koroscik is the best match for the college, and I am very pleased that she will now serve as dean." Koroscik will succeed Donald Harris, who is retiring from his administrative duties as dean and returning to the faculty. "Dean Harris is a strong and eloquent advocate for the arts. We are keenly aware of his contributions to the college, the university, and the art world, and we feel very fortunate that he will continue as an active member of our faculty," Gee said. Koroscik, 46, has served as associate dean of the College of the Arts since 1990. She joined Ohio State in 1981 and has served in several administrative roles, including acting administrative head of the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design and as acting chair of the Department of Art Education. She also has overseen technology initiatives for research and teaching in the college. In addition to her administrative duties, Koroscik has maintained an active teaching and research role at Ohio State. She has published extensively on arts and public policy and has contributed more than 30 articles to professional journals. She has frequently been an invited participant and lecturer at international symposia; most recently, in June, she presented a paper at an art education symposium at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She has recently completed the Management Development Program for academic administrators at Harvard University and was formerly a senior research fellow in the Office of Educational Research and Improvement of the U. S. Department of Education. Koroscik holds a bachelor's degree in the visual arts from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, and both a master's and doctorate in art education from Arizona State University. She is the recipient of many awards, including Ohio State's Arts and Sciences Student Council Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching. "I am proud and honored to accept the position of dean, and I look forward to leading our college to expanded horizons,” Koroscik said. “I welcome the opportunity to contribute to the further advancement of the college's programs on state, national, and international levels." The College of the Arts includes seven degree-granting academic units: the departments of Art; Art Education; Dance; History of Art; Industrial, Interior and Visual Communication Design; Theatre; and the School of Music. In addition, the college encompasses the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design, the Lawrence and Lee Theatre Research Institute, the History of Art Visual Resources Library, the Huntington Photographic Archive of Buddhist and Related Arts, the Hopkins Hall Gallery, the Bosendorfer Piano Laboratory, and the Dance Notation Bureau Extension. The college maintains close partnerships with the Wexner Center for the Arts and the Martin Luther King Jr. Performing and Cultural Arts Complex. The college has approximately 150 faculty members, 1,300 undergraduate majors and 500 graduate students. A significant number of undergraduates from other Ohio State colleges also take courses in the College of the Arts. # Contact: Richard Sisson, (614) 292-5881 Judith Koroscik, (614) 292-5171 [Submitted by: Von Vargas (vargas.12@osu.edu) Tue, 8 Jul 1997 16:31:59 -0400 (EDT)] All documents are the responsibility of their originator.
