97-07-11 Trustees Appoint 3 Deans, Others TRUSTEES APPOINT THREE DEANS, ACT ON OTHER PERSONNEL MATTERS COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees on Friday (7/11) appointed deans of three colleges, a vice provost for undergraduate studies, and an interim vice provost for minority affairs; named three professors to endowed positions; and made numerous other appointments. Ashley named dean of the College of Engineering Trustees named David B. Ashley, an internationally distinguished professor of engineering, as dean of the College of Engineering and to hold the John C. Geupel Chair in Civil Engineering, effective Oct. 1, 1997. Ashley has been the Taisei Professor and chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley since 1993. It is considered the premier department in this field. He was selected following a national search for a successor to Jose Cruz, dean since 1992, who has elected to return to the faculty. Ashley earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a second master's degree and his doctoral degree from Stanford University. His work has attracted international recognition with respect to the development and implementation of risk analysis techniques appropriate for project management and construction engineering decisions. He has worked to determine factors leading to construction success, predictive models of project performance, and has contributed in important ways to developing and testing of risk management responses to potential sources of cost overruns. Koroscik named dean of the College of the Arts The board named Judith Smith Koroscik of UPPER ARLINGTON as dean of the College of the Arts effective Aug. 1. Koroscik will succeed Donald Harris, who is retiring from his administrative duties and returning to the faculty. Koroscik has served as associate dean of the College of the Arts since 1990. She joined Ohio State in 1981 and has served in several administrative roles, including as acting administrative head of the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design and as acting chair of the Department of Art Education. She also has overseen technology initiatives for research and teaching in the college. She recently completed the Management Development Program for academic administrators at Harvard University. She formerly was a senior research fellow in the Office of Educational Research and Improvement of the U. S. Department of Education. Koroscik earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, and both her master's and doctoral degrees from Arizona State University. She is the recipient of many awards, including Ohio State's Arts and Sciences Student Council Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching. Gold named dean of College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. Trustees named Robert Gold of DELAWARE as dean of the College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences retroactive to July 1. Gold has served as the acting dean of the college since July 1996, when a national search was initiated to find a replacement for former Dean James Garland, who left Ohio State to become president of Miami University. Gold joined Ohio State's Department of Mathematics faculty in 1968. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Swarthmore College and a doctorate in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research field is algebraic number theory. Gold has also served as vice chair of Ohio State's Department of Mathematics for two years and as associate dean of the College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences for five years. Prior to joining Ohio State's faculty, Gold was a mathematician at the National Aeronautical and Space Agency (NASA). Garland named vice provost for undergraduate studies Martha McMackin Garland, interim undergraduate dean of the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and associate dean of the College of Humanities, was appointed vice provost for undergraduate studies effective Oct. 1. She succeeds Robert Arnold, who is returning to the faculty as a professor of art education. As vice provost, she will oversee all aspects of undergraduate education, from students’ initial contacts with Ohio State through their graduations. Garland earned her bachelor’s degree in history from Tulane University and the University of London in 1964. She holds a master’s degree in medieval history from Cornell University and a doctorate in modern British history from Ohio State. A member of Ohio State’s faculty since 1975, she is an associate professor of history. She has served on numerous university committees, including co-chairing the 46-member Committee on the Undergraduate Experience. The committee investigated all aspects of the student experience at Ohio State and in 1995 published an extensive report with strong recommendations for improvements. Under the direction of Provost Richard Sisson and Vice President for Student Affairs David Williams II, many of the committee’s recommendations have been implemented and others are under way. Rich named interim vice provost for minority affairs Barbara Rich of COLUMBUS (43231) was appointed as interim vice provost for minority affairs, from Aug. 1, 1997, to June 30, 1998. She will succeed LeRoy Pernell, who recently resigned to accept the deanship of the law school at Northern Illinois University. Rich is currently director of recruitment and retention in the Office of Minority Affairs. She is responsible for oversight of the Minority Scholars Program, the Freshman Foundation, the Campbell Soup Migrant Scholarship Program and the Carl Rowan Project Excellence Program in Washington, D.C. She joined the Ohio State staff in 1977. She earned her bachelor’s degree in secondary education from St. Joseph’s University and her master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Ohio State. Feinberg named to Morrow Chair Trustees named Martin Feinberg of ROCHESTER, N.Y., a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Rochester, to the Richard M. Morrow Chair in Polymer Engineering, retroactive to June 1. Feinberg specializes in chemical reaction networks and kinetic systems. A native of New York City, Feinberg earned his undergraduate degree from Cooper Union, his master’s degree from Purdue University and his doctoral degree from Princeton University. He is a recipient of several awards and honors, including the Richard Wilhelm Award of the American Institute of Chemical Engineering and the Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. The Morrow Chair was established in 1991 by the Amoco Foundation in honor of Richard M. Morrow, an Ohio State alumnus who earned a degree in engineering in mining in 1948. Income supports the promotion, teaching and research in polymer engineering. Nahata and Soloway named to Kimberly professorship The Board named Milap Nahata of POWELL, professor of pharmacy practice and pediatrics, to the Charles H. Kimberly Professorship in Pharmacy through June 30, 2000. A specialist in pediatric drug formulations, Nahata has taught at Ohio State since 1979. Nahata earned his undergraduate degrees at the University of Jodhpur and the University of Bombay. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from Duquesne University. He is past president and chair of the Research Institute of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP). Nahata is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Russell R. Miller Award for Sustained Contributions to the Literature of Clinical Pharmacy, ACCP. Trustees also named Albert H. Soloway of WORTHINGTON, a professor of medicinal chemistry, to the Charles H. Kimberly Professorship in Pharmacy, through June 30, 2000. A specialist in the area of biochemistry, Soloway has taught at Ohio State since 1977. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Soloway earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and his doctoral degree from the University of Rochester. He has served as a consultant for the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Public Health Service, National Cancer Institute. The Kimberly Professorship was established in 1948 by Charles H. Kimberly, an Ohio State alumnus who earned a degree in pharmacy in 1900, to support the teaching of pharmacy. Appointment of chairs and directors The board appointed: -- Jack A. Rall of UPPER ARLINGTON as interim chair of the Department of Physiology, through June 30, 1998. Rall specializes in muscle physiology and interjectors of muscle contractions, and has taught at Ohio State since 1974. -- Robert S. Livesey of WESTON as director of the School of Architecture, through June 30, 2001. Livesey specializes in additions and renovations, and has taught at Ohio State since 1983. -- Daniel D. Sedmak of COLUMBUS (43235) as chair of the Department of Pathology, through June 30, 2001. Sedmak has taught at Ohio State since 1985 and specializes in immunopathology.
