97-07-11 Trustees Outline Search & Transition BOARD CHAIR ALEX SHUMATE OUTLINES SEARCH AND TRANSITION COLUMBUS -- In two actions to “maintain momentum and focus on the university’s strategic priorities,” Board of Trustees Chair Alex Shumate today (7/11) named both a transition team and a committee to search for a new president of The Ohio State University. E. Gordon Gee recently announced that he will leave Ohio State to become president of Brown University on Jan. 1, 1998. Today, Shumate established a presidential search committee, which he will chair himself, and a six-person transition team headed by Provost Richard Sisson. Sisson is the university’s chief academic officer and its senior vice president. The committee to search for Ohio State’s new president will have broad representation from all university constituencies: four trustees, five faculty, two students, two deans, two non- teaching staff, one vice president, and one representative of the Alumni Association. The committee’s charge, Shumate announced, will include developing a list of candidates, verifying qualifications and interviewing candidates, and making recommendation of one or more candidates to the board during the first quarter of the 1998 calendar year. Trustees on the search committee will be George Skestos, James Patterson, and Tamala Longaberger. The other members will be recommended by various governing or administrative bodies. “The transition team will provide advice and counsel to the Board of Trustees and President Gee that will allow us to keep moving forward,” Shumate said. Its members, in addition to Sisson, are: Ted Celeste, vice chair of the Board of Trustees; William Napier, secretary to the Board of Trustees and executive assistant to the president; William Shkurti, vice president for finance; David Williams II, vice president for student affairs; and Nancy Zimpher, dean of the College of Education and executive dean of the professional colleges. “We are looking forward to a clear, smooth transition,” Shumate said. “I have the utmost confidence that Ohio State will find the right leader for the university at this time in its history.” # Contact: Malcolm Baroway, University Communications, (614) 292-6895.
