97-07-14 Martha Garland Named Vice Provost MARTHA GARLAND NAMED VICE PROVOST FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES COLUMBUS -- Martha McMackin Garland has been named vice provost for undergraduate studies at The Ohio State University, effective Oct. 1. Garland’s appointment was approved by the university’s Board of Trustees on July 11. She is currently interim undergraduate dean of the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and associate dean for undergraduate studies in the College of Humanities. She will assume her new responsibilities at the beginning of autumn quarter. As vice provost, Garland will oversee all aspects of undergraduate education, from students’ initial contact with Ohio State through their graduations. In nominating Garland for the job, Senior Vice President and Provost Richard Sisson said: “Professor Garland is held in highest regard by her colleagues. She is a solid scholar and a wonderful advocate for students, fully committed to furthering a quality educational experience for our undergraduates. She has tackled complex issues with intelligence, tenacity and grace. We look forward to having her in this new role.” Garland succeeds Robert Arnold, who is returning to the faculty as a professor of art education after seven years service as a vice provost. “Professor Arnold has launched several outstanding initiatives that will affect students in tremendously positive ways for many, many years,” Sisson said. “He is a dynamic, articulate spokesperson for students and faculty and a thoughtful and valued colleague. We wish him the very best.” Garland, 54, earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Tulane University and the University of London in 1964. She holds a master’s degree in medieval history from Cornell University and a doctorate in modern British history from Ohio State. An associate professor of history, she has been a member of the Ohio State faculty since 1975. Garland has served on numerous university committees, including co-chairing the 46-member Committee on the Undergraduate Experience (CUE). The committee investigated all aspects of the student experience at Ohio State and in 1995 published an extensive report with strong recommendations for improvements. Under the direction of Provost Sisson and Vice President for Student Affairs David Williams II, many of the CUE recommendations have already been implemented and others are under way. “I have always been strongly committed to matters concerning the well-being of undergraduates,” Garland said. “I am delighted to have the opportunity of being a voice for our students and a coordinator of the university’s efforts to provide them with an absolutely first-rate educational experience. # Contacts: Richard Sisson, (614) 292-5881 Martha Garland, (614) 292-1882 [Submitted by: Von Vargas (vargas.12@osu.edu) Mon, 14 Jul 1997 16:15:08 -0400 (EDT)] All documents are the responsibility of their originator.
