97-09-05 Trustees: Street renamed, endowment funds accepted TRUSTEES RENAME STREET, ACCEPT NAMED ENDOWMENT FUNDS COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees voted Friday (9/5) to rename a portion of Fyffe Road in honor of Fred Taylor, former head basketball coach, and accepted 22 new named endowment funds. Street renamed in honor of Coach Fred Taylor Trustees renamed a portion of Fyffe Road, between Lane Avenue and Ackerman Road, as Fred Taylor Drive, in honor of the former head basketball coach. The road runs along the west side of the Schottenstein Center and will be a major access route to the new basketball arena. Taylor, who coached the Buckeyes from 1959 to 1976, had a career record of 297 wins and 158 losses for a winning percentage of .654. His teams appeared in five NCAA tournaments, winning the national championship in 1960 and finishing second twice and third once. He holds Ohio State records for consecutive victories (32), consecutive regular season wins (47), consecutive Big Ten victories (27) and consecutive wins at home (50). Taylor was twice voted College Coach of the Year. Taylor, an Ohio State graduate, played both basketball and baseball as a student, winning All America honors in baseball in 1950. Board accepts 22 named endowed funds Trustees heard a report from Jerry May, vice president for development, on development efforts, including the establishment of the Professor Sylvan G. Frank Graduate Fellowship in Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Gifts of $453,750 were received from Chih-Ming Chen of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to provide one graduate student fellowship per year under the direction of Sylvan G. Frank, professor of pharmacy. May also reported the establishment of 21 other new named endowed funds with gifts totaling more than $2 million. -- The George M. and Renée K. Levine Graduate Fellowship in Jewish Studies, $245,000. -- The Margaret D. Blickle Endowed Research Fund for Graduate Students, $101,928, to support travel for graduate students in the English Department doing research or presenting results of research at professional meetings. -- The Marilyn and Donald Harris Scholarship Fund, $71,703, for graduate or undergraduate students pursuing studies in music composition. -- The Marion County 4-H Endowment Fund, $55,200, to support a variety of activities in the Marion County 4-H Program. -- The Sally K. Ebling Urban Extension 4-H Fund, $50,125, to support 4-H volunteer and county extension agents leadership training. -- The 4-H Camp Palmer Endowment Fund, $16,666, to enhance and foster further development of resources and camping programs at 4-H Camp Palmer. -- The Fayette County 4-H Endowment Fund, $15,335, to support a variety of activities in the Fayette County 4-H Program. -- The Medina County Herb Society Endowment Fund, $15,000, to provide a scholarship to a continuing horticulture student enrolled at the Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute. -- The Ruth Shaw Murphey Medical Research Fund, $251,861, to support researchers at the Medical Research Facility. -- The Battelle Fund in Inhalation Therapeutics, $250,000, to support research in inhalation therapeutics that will be used to guide the selection of drugs and formulations for pulmonary delivery. -- The W. Arthur Cullman MBA Fellowship, $250,000, to provide fellowships to MBA students, with preference given to those with a marketing emphasis. -- The Alice L. Akerberg, Dean’s Innovation Fund, $204,368, to support students and faculty in the Max M. Fisher College of Business. -- The Arthur E. Shepard Family Fund, $150,000, for discretionary use university-wide. -- The Benua Foundation Fund in Orthopedic Surgery, $100,000, to support the advancement of medical knowledge in the field of orthopedic surgery, with preference to research in orthopedic joint reconstructive surgery. -- The Ronald D. Brooks Athletic Scholarship Fund, $55,132, to supplement the student-athlete grant-in-aid scholarship costs of a football player pursuing an undergraduate degree. -- The William M. and Rosalind W. Wolfson Scholarship in the Fisher College of Business, $50,000, to provide scholarships for out-of-state, economically disadvantaged undergraduate students majoring in business with a minimum GPA of 3.0. -- The Sylvia Westerman Endowed Fund, $37,781, for the conservation and maintenance of the collection of the Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Theatre Research Institute. -- The Alumnae Scholarship Housing Residents Fund, $25,210, to provide funds for current financial needs of residents and/or for capital improvements, equipment or furnishings of Alumnae Scholarship Housing. -- The Geraldine M. and Wayne H.
