97-09-12 About 8,000 Student Expected to Move to Campus

OHIO STATE PREPARES FOR STUDENT MOVE-IN; 8,000 STUDENTS
ANTICIPATED

     COLUMBUS -- Some 48,000 students will begin a new academic
year at the Columbus campus of The Ohio State University on
Wednesday (9/24). Between Sept. 21-23, almost 8,000 students will
be moving into dormitories; about 6,000 of them are expected
Sunday (9/21), the first day residence halls open. 

     To help with the move-in process, at least 900 student
volunteers, called OWLS or “Orientation Welcome Leaders,” will
unload cars and help cart student belongings into the residence
halls.

     Their first stop on campus is French Field House, 460 Woody
Hayes Drive, to check in and get their keys.  Students will have
the opportunity to transact other university business as the
offices of financial aid, fees and deposits, athletic tickets,
transportation and parking and university ID card services will
be on site at French Field House.

     From there, students will leave the field house with color-
coded hang-tags for their cars which will allow traffic officers
to direct them to the appropriate unloading area for their
residence hall.  Upon arrival to the residence hall, OWLS will
unload each car and transport the belongings to the student’s
room.

     Several parking relocations have been planned for Sunday
(9/21) including:

  Parking and traffic will be prohibited in north residence
halls parking lots except for students moving into the
residence halls.  Staff parking will be in the Arps
garage at no charge.

  Parking lots south and north of French Field House, south
of Lincoln Tower, west of the stadium and north of
Morrill Tower will be restricted to students moving into
residence halls.  Staff parking will be between Morrill
and Lincoln Towers.

  Eleventh and 12th avenues, the lot south of Hale Hall,
the parking lots south of 11th Avenue, and the 11th
Avenue garage will be restricted to move-in parking. 
Staff parking will be in the Ohio Union garage at no
charge.

     Several streets will be closed to through traffic: Curl
Drive from Woodruff to Neil Avenue; 11th and 12th avenues between
High Street and Neil Avenue; Neil Avenue between 11th and 12th
avenues; College Road between 11th and 17th avenues; Cannon Drive
between Woody Hayes Drive and Herrick Drive; and Woody Hayes
Drive and Woodruff Avenue between Cannon Drive and Curl Drive.
