97-10-03 Trustees: Development Report, Personnel Matters TRUSTEES ESTABLISH ENDOWED NAMED FUNDS, CONDUCT PERSONNEL MATTERS COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees accepted an endowed named chair and 14 new endowed named funds and conducted personnel matters during its meeting Friday (10/3). Board accepts one endowed named chair, 14 endowed named funds Trustees heard a report from Jerry May, vice president for development, on development efforts, including the establishment of The Transportation Research Center Inc. Chair in Intelligent Transportation Systems. Gifts of $1.5 million were received from Transportation Research Center Inc. to promote and support education and research in intelligent transportation-related technology in the College of Engineering. The chairholder will be expected to focus on developing new concepts and principles of intelligent control and intelligent systems with applications to surface vehicles, surface transportation systems and their safe operation. May also reported the establishment of 14 new endowed named funds with gifts totaling more than $1.3 million. -- The Thomas J. and Ann Y. Selby Cancer Research Endowment, $149,445, to support cancer research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center - the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute. -- The Ohio State University Department of Astronomy Endowment Fund, $41,730, to further the education, research and service mission of the Department of Astronomy. -- The Murphy Family Annual and Perennial Garden Endowment Fund, $25,000, for the establishment and maintenance of annual or perennial plantings at the Chadwick Arboretum. -- Lorraine A. Lange Graduate Fellowship Fund, $23,000, to provide scholarships for individuals pursuing a Ph.D. in elementary education. -- The James R. & Marlene C. Helt Family 4-H Fund, $16,957, for support of 4-H leadership programs. -- The Margaret A. and Theodore A. Hendricks Study/Travel Endowed Scholarship Fund, $15,120, for one or more study/travel scholarships to students attending Ohio State’s Marion campus. -- The de Guzman Endowment Fund for International Education, $15,000, to assist international students from any country at Ohio State and/or students participating in study abroad in any country. -- The Meigs County 4-H Endowment Fund, $15,000, to support the Meigs County 4-H Program. -- The Joseph M. Ryan, M.D., Chair Fund in Cardiovascular Medicine, $753,158, to support a chair position in the Division of Cardiology. -- The Medical Research Facility Grant Fund, $139,741, to support researchers in the Medical Research Facility, with selection made through a grant application process. -- William J. Belford Cancer Research Endowment Fund, $50,000, to support human cancer genetics research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center - The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute. -- David A. Rismiller Faculty Fellowship Fund, $44,953, to fund activities in support of the faculty of the Fisher College of Business. -- The Paul and Nancy Wherry Endowed Fund in the History of Pharmacy, $25,200, to support educational and research initiatives in the History of Pharmacy at the College of Pharmacy. -- The Virginia S. Hull Endowment Fund for Study Abroad, $25,000, to support undergraduate study abroad to Spain, Portugal, France and Italy. Appointments, reappointments, change in title Mark W. Shanda of COLUMBUS (43214) was appointed interim chair of the Department of Theatre through Dec. 31. Trustees reappointed Robert P. Leone to the Berry Chair of New Technologies in Marketing from Jan. 1, 1998 through Dec. 31, 2002. Patrick S. Osmer of UPPER ARLINGTON was reappointed chair of the Department of Astronomy through Sept. 30, 2001. The board also approved a change in title for Hagop Mekhjian of UPPER ARLINGTON from assistant vice president for health sciences to associate vice president in the Office of Health Sciences.
