THE JAMES PREPARES CANCER HOME CARE GIVERS--Oct. 14, 21 and 28 Families who are caring for a loved one with cancer can learn methods at the Prepared Family Caregiver Course for Cancer, 7-9 p.m. at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital. The three-part course is part of the Medical Center’s Health for Life programs to bring health information to the community. CHICAGO ALUMNI KICK OFF FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN--Oct. 16. Ohio State alumnus and Shedd Aquarium CEO/Director Ted Beattie and his wife, Penny, will host a reception and dinner in Chicago, celebrating Affirm Thy Friendship, Ohio State’s fund-raising campaign for the 21st century. The invitation only event takes place at the Shedd Aquarium, 1200 South Lake Shore Drive; it includes a 6 p.m. reception, 7 p.m. program and 8 p.m. dinner. Media may attend by calling Becky Crowell. Introducing students to overseas opportunities ranging from a Shakespeare class in Great Britain to a summer in Swaziland, the Ohio State University Office of International Education will host its annual Study Abroad Fair on Friday (10/17) , from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Oxley Hall, 1712 Neil Ave. Students can find information on the Office of International Education’s 80-plus programs taking place in more than 30 countries. The fair will feature a variety of international foods and music. Ohio State University annually sends approximately 500 students abroad for programs sponsored by the Office of International Education. PROCEDURES IMPROVE OPEN HEART SURGERY--Ohio State surgeons are among the first in Ohio to use new minimally invasive methods for open heart surgery, resulting in less trauma to the chest, quicker recovery time, less pain, and shorter hospital stays. Minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass surgery (MID- CAB) is a new alternative to traditional coronary bypass procedures. CONTACT: Medical Center Communications, 293-3737.
