SAILING CLUB HOSTS REGATTA--Oct. 18. The Ohio State University Sailing Club will host the Buckeye Fall Regatta on Hoover Lake in Westerville Oct. 18-19. Sailing teams from all over the Midwest will compete. On Saturday (10/18) the race will start at 9:30 a.m. and end around 5 p.m. The finals are Sunday (10/19) from 9:30 a.m. to 1p.m. The top Ohio team receives the All-Ohio Trophy. CONTACT: Mike Moes, sailing club president, 421-2638. OHIO STATE CELEBRATES HOMECOMING WEEK OCT. 20-25. “Planet Buckeye, The Spirit of Ohio State” is the theme for 1997 homecoming activities. Among the events for students and alumni: -- Monday (10/20), 7 p.m., a rally on the Ohio Union West Lawn, 1739 N.High St., will feature the marching band and Women’s Glee Club, and remarks by campus dignitaries. Following the rally, a Buffalo Wing-off will be held at Larkins Hall, 337 W. 17th Ave., from 8 to 10 p.m. to decide which restaurant makes the best wings. -- Tuesday (10/21), 4 p.m., students, faculty and staff will participate in a line dancing event with the collegiate 4-H program on the Oval. -- Thursday (10/23), the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will crown the African American homecoming king and queen during the African American Homecoming Pageant, 8 p.m. in Weigel Hall, 1866 College Road. -- Friday (10/24), 6 p.m., the homecoming parade, featuring floats, the marching band and homecoming court, begins at 6 p.m. at the French Field House, 460 Woody Hayes Drive. Astronauts Nancy Currie and Ronald Sega are the grand marshals. They will lead the parade east along Woody Hayes Drive, south on High Street, west on West 12th Avenue and north on Cannon Drive to end at the French Field House. Following the parade, Currie, Sega, the football team, cheerleaders, homecoming court and other supporters will hold a Pep Rally at 7 p.m. at the field house parking lot. The homecoming king and queen will be announced and crowned during the Pep Rally. At 8 p.m., Red Wanting Blue will perform at the field house parking lot. -- Saturday (10/25) The Ohio State Buckeyes will host the Northwestern Wildcats at 3:30 p.m. From 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., a homecoming dance will be held in the Ohio Union West Ballroom, 1739 N. Ohio State has expanded its Columbus campus community charitable giving drive to include six agencies in addition to United Way of Franklin County. The drive, which runs from Oct. 20 through Dec. 5, also will include the Black United Fund of Central Ohio, Greater Columbus Community Shares, National Voluntary Health Services of Ohio, the College Fund/UNCF, United Way of Delaware County and United Way of Fairfield County. Last year, university faculty and staff contributed more than $640,000 to the drive. The 1997 goal is $700,000. CONTACT: Cathy Cooper, director of human resources administration, 292-4164. “AIR BUD” STAR SCHEDULED FOR SURGERY AT VETERINARY HOSPITAL--Oct. 21. The golden retriever who gained fame as the hoops-shooting star of the Disney movie “Air Bud” will undergo hip replacement surgery at the Ohio State University Veterinary Hospital, 601 Tharp St., on Tuesday (10/21). Bud lost a rear leg to cancer recently and now needs hip surgery. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Marvin Olmstead, one of the most prominent orthopedic veterinary surgeons in the country. The canine star will arrive at the hospital with his owner, Kevin DiCicco, on Monday (10/20) for a consultation with Dr. Olmstead. PROJECT WILL TRAIN AREA UNEMPLOYED FOR OSU ENTRY-LEVEL JOBS--Oct. 21. University faculty, staff and students are invited to participate in a project that focuses on job training and placement for unemployed OSU neighborhood adults. The Job Issues Network for OSU Neighborhood Adults will hold an open forum at the Faculty Club, 181 S. Oval Dr., on Tuesday (10/21) from 4 to 5 p.m. to encourage participation in the plan. The Job Issues Network is part of Ohio State’s campus outreach initiative that matches university resources with community needs. An OSU CARES (OSU Community Access to Resources and Educational Services) seed grant will provide a training laboratory for faculty and students to design curriculum and mentoring programs aimed at moving the unemployed neighbors into OSU entry-level positions.
