97-10-17 UTS Seeks Student Input Posted for Sally Hritz, University Technology Services OHIO STATE GIVES STUDENTS MORE INPUT ON TECHNOLOGY NEEDS COLUMBUS -- To ensure that student concerns on technology issues are considered in a systematic and meaningful way at The Ohio State University, a Student Technology Advisory Committee and a paid student staff position have been created. University Technology Services, which leads and supports technological endeavors at OSU, is now seeking applicants for a student associate director who will serve on and provide liaison between the committee and university administration. James F. Davis, associate provost and UTS director, believes strongly that student needs must be considered directly, and he's enthusiastic about the new efforts. "We feel that extending the existing advisory committee representation to include the student associate director and the new advisory committee is the best way for UTS to get student feedback on a regular basis and to have their direct input as we make technology decisions that they ultimately have to live with." Undergraduate Student Government Vice President Greg Krabacher concurs. “Whether a student is typing an assignment at a public computing site, reviewing course information on OSU web pages, or communicating with a classmate or instructor via e-mail, technology services directly impact the quality of students' college experience." The idea for a student technology advisory committee took form over the past year through discussions between UTS and the Undergraduate Student Government. They jointly proposed the committee, and it was readily accepted by Ed Ray, senior vice provost and chief information officer for the university. The student advisory committee will include undergraduate, professional, and graduate students meeting on a regular basis with UTS management solely to discuss student issues. It will operate on the same principles, and its recommendations will be viewed on the same level, as the three existing UTS advisory committees. The three existing committees focus on instructional technologies, research computing, and business partners, and each is composed of faculty, administrators, and student members appointed by Ray. The committees give UTS and the Office of Academic Affairs a formal communication channel with the university community. The Student Technology Advisory Committee will include nine representatives of the university student body, each with one vote. Student membership on the committee will include undergraduates, graduates, and professional students. The UTS director and representatives of UTS management, including the student associate director, will serve in an ex-officio capacity with speaking privileges but no voting privileges. To provide support, continuity, and knowledge of the advocacy area, each committee includes a UTS associate director who works half time in his/her original faculty or administrator position and half time for UTS. The student associate director hired by UTS will provide support to the new committee while working in a mentor relationship with the faculty and business partner associate directors. Interested, conscientious students are encouraged to apply. The deadline is October 31. UTS is seeking applicants who are full-time students at The Ohio State University in good standing and making appropriate progress toward an undergraduate or graduate degree with at least third year status. Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required. The position is for 20 hours per week during academic quarters while enrolled full time; 40 hours per week are possible during quarter breaks and one off-quarter per year. The successful applicant will serve as UTS associate director for student issues; work in a mentor relationship with a faculty or business partner UTS associate director; serve as an ex-officio member of the UTS Student Technology Advisory Committee; assist the committee chairperson in coordinating committee activities; provide and coordinate support for the committee; participate in developing proposals for new technologyinitiatives and funding in support of student needs; participate with the director and UTS management team to set goals, define priorities, and develop policies; and carry out short and long term planning for University Technology Services.
