WEXNER CENTER HOSTS FAMILY DAY--Oct. 26. Tony Award-winning dancer Savion Glover will make a special appearance at the Wexner Center during Family Day on Sunday (Oct. 26). Glover, star of the Broadway hit Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk, will give a show-and-tell presentation at 3 p.m. in Mershon Auditorium. Other activities, inspired by the Staging Surrealism exhibit, are a magic workshop, spooky stories and drawing games, plus making fantasy costumes, masks and collages to take home. Family Day admission is free for children 4-12 and accompanying adults, but tickets are required for the Glover presentation. Pick up free tickets at noon in Mershon Auditorium lobby. The next NASA space shuttle flight, scheduled for launch on Nov. 19, will carry an experiment developed at Ohio State by plant biologist Fred Sack. Sack’s forest of moss plants will lift off in space-friendly petri dishes contained in specially designed hardware. One of the research goals is to see how the absence of gravity affects moss- tip growth cells. Sack’s research team includes postdoctoral researcher Volker Kern and undergraduate plant biology student Nathan White. Reporters interested in learning more about the project may meet with the three researchers in their lab from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday (Oct. 28). SPANISH HISTORY PROVIDES LESSONS FOR MODERN SOCIETY-Oct. 28. Geoffery Parker, professor of European history, will discuss the lessons that can be learned from the failure of Philip II of Spain (1556-98) and the decline of Spain as a great power in Philip II of Spain: Knowledge and Power. Parker, the Andreas Dorpalen Designated Professor of European History, will give the College of Humanities’ first Inaugural Lecture of the year at 7:30 p.m. at the Faculty Club, 181 S. Oval Dr. CONTACT: Shari Lorbach, College of Humanities, 292-1882. MATH AND SCIENCE TEACHING MATERIALS CENTER GETS $23 MILLION GRANT. Ohio State’s Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science Education will receive $23 million over the next five years to continue helping K-12 math and science teachers identify the best teaching materials and practices available. The contract, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, adds students and parents as additional customers. Officials also plan to use the grant to assist schools in improving the mathematics curricula in middle and high schools. The ENC was created by Congress five years ago in an effort to identify, centralize and disseminate to teachers information about educational materials. The clearinghouse’s collection of more than 10,000 items is accessible through both a toll-free, dial-up system and the World Wide Web on the Internet.
