97-10-27 Gee to Head AAU Exec. Com. GEE ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITIES COLUMBUS -- E. Gordon Gee, president of The Ohio State University, was elected chair of the Association of American Universities earlier this week in New York City at the association’s annual fall meeting. Gee, who has been vice-chair for the past year, will serve a one-year term. He succeeds George Rupp, president of Columbia University. As chair, Gee will head an 11-member executive committee responsible for general oversight of the association’s policies, finances, and general operation. The executive committee includes five presidents of private universities, five presidents of public universities, and the president of the AAU itself. Gee, who will become president of Brown University in January, will be the first person to serve as president of two different universities during his term as AAU chair, said AAU spokesman Peter Smith. The chairmanship alternates between public and private universities, and by tradition is assumed by the previous year’s vice chair. Gee was elected as a public university president. His vice chair is Steven Sample, president of the University of Southern California. At the same meeting, the AAU elected a new president, Nils Hasselmo, former president of the University of Minnesota, who on July 1 will succeed Cornelius Pings who plans to retire June 30 after more than five years in the position. The AAU comprises 62 major public and private universities with strong programs in research, graduate and professional studies. # Contacts: Peter Smith, AAU, 202-408-7500 Ruth Gerstner, Ohio State, (614) 292-8424 [Submitted by: Von Vargas (vargas.12@osu.edu) Mon, 27 Oct 1997 15:03:35 -0500 (EST)] All documents are the responsibility of their originator.
