97-10-28 Lisa Tiger to Speak for Native American Heritage Month AIDS EDUCATOR TO SPEAK NOV. 6 DURING NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH COLUMBUS -- AIDS educator and feminist Lisa Tiger, a member of the Muscogee Nation who is of Creek/Seminole/Cherokee descent, will speak on AIDS education at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 in the Ohio Union Conference Theater, 1739 N. High St. Her presentation is among events being held in observance of Native American Heritage Month at The Ohio State University. An artist and tribal activist, Tiger has spoken at schools, clinics and conferences across the country about AIDS education, prevention and research since she tested positive for HIV in 1992. She recently formed the Lisa Tiger Fitness Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building healthy American Indian communities through traditional cultural practices. She is the recipient of the National Organization for Women’s 1994 Woman of Courage Award and the Award of Distinction for Personal Courage and Community Leadership from the American Foundation for AIDS Research. Other Native American Heritage Month events at Ohio State include a talk and a movie screening. A brownbag talk titled “Cherokee Nation Constitutional Crises, 1997” by Barry Landeros- Thomas, a graduate administrative associate in the Office of Minority Affairs who is of Cherokee descent, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 3 in the Ohio Union Board Room. A brownbag film, “Honorable Nations,” will be screened from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 12 in the Ohio Union Memorial Room. The American Indian Council, a student organization, initiated and helped sponsor Tiger’s visit.
