PARENTS VISIT CAMPUS DURING ANNUAL PARENT’S WEEKEND--Oct. 31- Nov. 2. Students and their families go to class together, tour campus, and have Sunday brunch with President Gee during Parent’s Weekend, Friday through Sunday. Friday, parents may attend classes with their students and then go to an 8 p.m. Halloween Concert featuring the OSU Chorale, Women’s Glee Club, and Symphonic Band in Weigel Hall, 1866 College Road. Saturday, parents can tour Ohio Stadium or search campus for “Hidden Treasures.” Sunday, President Gee will join parents for brunch at 8 and 10 a.m. and 12 noon in the Ohio Union ballrooms, 1739 N. HIGH ON PRIDE CAMPUS CLEANUP IS SATURDAY--Nov. 1. 2,000 Ohio State students, faculty and staff will join neighborhood residents in the seventh “High on Pride” University Community Cleanup on Saturday (11/1) from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will pick up litter, sweep streets and sidewalks, and collect recyclables in the neighborhood just east of campus. The area covers 250 blocks, 30 miles of sidewalk and more than 65 miles of roadway. The cleanup area is bounded on the north by Blake Avenue, the south by Ninth Avenue, the east by the Conrail tracks, and the west by North High Street and the campus. The Ohio State University Marching Band performs in concert at Mershon Auditorium on Sunday (11/2) at 3 p.m. This annual indoor concert will include the band’s usual antics plus fight songs and music from the half-time shows of Buckeye football games. UNIVERSITY HOSTS GRADUATE SCHOOL VISITATION DAYS--Nov. 2-4. 220 honors seniors from 52 colleges and universities will visit Ohio State as part of the Office of Minority Affairs annual graduate school visitation days. The event kicks off with an opening session on Sunday (11/2) at 4:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on the Lane, 328 W. Lane Ave. At 8:15 p.m., students are invited to a gospel concert featuring bass-baritone Wintley Phipps in Weigel Auditorium, 1866 College Road. Monday, students will meet with faculty and visit academic units. The event ends with a banquet at the Holiday Inn on the Lane at 6:30 p.m. Harley Flack, president of Wright State University, is the keynote speaker. The first University Distinguished Lecture this school year will explore the notion of the witch in the imagination of early modern Europe. Barbara Becker- Cantarino, professor in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures, will deliver The Witch: Fiction and Fact in Early Modern German Culture at 4 p.m. Monday (11/3) in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater. The lecture will examine how the fantasies of the witch relate to questions of gender, subjectivity, identity and violence. COLUMBUS TEACHERS JOIN OSU AND USA TODAY IN PARTNERSHIP--Nov. 4. Teachers at two Columbus schools will welcome media to their classrooms Tuesday (11/4) to illustrate their participation in a partnership between the Ohio State University College of Education and USA TODAY. The college will contribute monthly research-based tips for teachers to Classline Today, USA TODAY’s daily satellite-transmitted lesson plan for teachers. One issue being explored in Columbus classrooms is the newspaper’s role in enhancing education’s school-to-work emphasis. YOUNG STUDENTS LEARN ELECTION PROCESS WITH CD-ROM. You Choose! Electing Your Government is a new interactive, multi- media CD-ROM designed to help Ohio school children further their knowledge about Ohio government and the election process. The learning tool, being distributed free to schools and libraries in Ohio beginning this month, was created by Ohio State’s Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD), in partnership with American NewMedia Educational Foundation and Ohio Secretary of State Bob Taft. The program uses videotape footage, photos, collages, a glossary of terms, printed text and audio including music, as well as an on-line note-taking function and a personalized campaign sign-making activity. Ohio State students can learn about and suggest improvements to High Street at a public forum on Wednesday (11/5). Campus Partners, established by Ohio State in 1995 to promote revitalization of the neighborhoods around campus, will hold the forum at 4 p.m. in the Hall of Fame Room of the Frank W. Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Avenue. An urban design professional with Goody, Clancy & Associates will make a presentation about High Street and will hear students’ suggestions and questions. Campus Partners last July employed Goody, Clancy & Associates as the lead consultant for its year-long High Street Urban Design Project. The project’s goal is to enhance the urban character and vitality of High Street as the great “main street” of the University District. AIDS educator and feminist Lisa Tiger, a member of the Muscogee Nation who is of Creek/Seminole/ Cherokee descent, will speak on AIDS education at 7 p.m. Thursday (11/6) in the Ohio Union Conference Theater, 1739 North High Street. Her presentation is part of Native American Heritage Month at Ohio State. Tiger has spoken nationwide about AIDS education, prevention and research since she tested positive for HIV in 1992. She recently formed the Lisa Tiger Fitness Foundation, dedicated to building healthy American Indian communities through traditional cultural practices.
