EVENTS WISH PRESIDENT GEE FAREWELL-- As President Gee enters his last month as head cheerleader at Ohio State, he will attend five public events. In his final speeches, Gee plans to reflect on the University's progress during his tenure, and its promise for the 21st century. HOLIDAY SAFETY FOR BABIES--Dec. 7. Through its Health For Life programs and classes, The Ohio State University Medical Center offers education programs to the Columbus community. Holiday Safety for Babies gives parents information about safety issues when decorating for the holidays with small children around. Gordon Gee, whose seven- year presidency of The Ohio State University ends this year, will take the podium one last time to deliver the autumn quarter commencement address Dec. 12 in St. John Arena. Approximately 1,400 degrees will be awarded in the ceremony, which begins at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony is Gee’s final commencement at Ohio State. He will become president of Brown University in Providence, R.I., on Jan. 1, 1998. REMINDER: Media wishing to cover commencement must wear the badge provided by University Communications. PEOPLE WITH ALS SOUGHT TO TRY NEW MEDICINE. A drug that may slow the progression of ALS, a neurological disease, is being studied at The Ohio State University Medical Center. ALS victims between age 18-75 are being sought for the study. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a disease where nerves that control muscle activity degenerate within the brain and spinal cord, causing a gradual weakening and wasting away of the muscles. The drug is being tested at about 60 medical centers in the world and has shown promising results in an earlier study. CONTACT: David Crawford, Medical Center Communications, 293-3737.
