97-12-22 Community Service Projects Coincide with Sugar Bowl NEWS ADVISORY: OHIO STATE COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS TO COINCIDE WITH SUGAR BOWL The Ohio State University Office of Student Affairs is coordinating several community service projects in New Orleans to coincide with the football team’s participation in the Sugar Bowl Jan. 1. The projects include a collection of cold-weather clothing donations for homeless and low-income families enduring a colder- than-usual winter this year in New Orleans. Groups of volunteers also will work at various sites in New Orleans during their visit to the city. Fans traveling to the Sugar Bowl are asked to pack extra coats, sweaters, blankets, shoes and other cold-weather items for donation. Receptacles for the items will be located at the Hilton Riverview and Sheraton hotels in New Orleans. The Office of Student Activities also will collect donations in Columbus between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Dec. 23 and 24 and 29-31 in Room 218 of the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St. Nearly 200 Ohio State representatives, including Interim President Richard Sisson, the marching band and cheerleaders, also will volunteer at food pantries, missions and homes for people with disabilities in New Orleans. Sisson and Florida State University President Talbot “Sandy” D’Alemberte are scheduled to volunteer together at the Ozanam Inn, an emergency shelter and soup kitchen at 843 Camp St. in New Orleans, beginning at 9 a.m. Dec. 31.
