WOMEN, VIOLENCE AND FAMILY VALUES IS TOPIC OF LECTURE--Jan. 9. The first in a series of lectures on Interdisciplinary Exploration Into The Realities Of Women In Contemporary Society will be delivered Friday from 2-4 p.m. in 120 Baker Systems Engineering Building, 1971 Neil Ave. Demie Kurz, co-director of Women’s Studies and professor of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, will discuss Women, Violence, and Family Values. She has written extensively about domestic violence and concludes that the real problem of divorce is not a loss of family values, but the failure of our social policies to protect women and children living in single-parent families. Presented by the OSU Medical Center, Spirit of Women offers motivational entertainment and information, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at the Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Rd. The event centers around Attitudes with Wings, a play that explores women’s friendships, shopping, dieting, loving, caring, losing, winning, growing up and growing old. CELEBRATIONS--Jan. 12-16. Ohio State will honor Martin Luther King Jr. with a number of events. Among them: Rosa Smith, superintendent of Columbus Public Schools, with a lecture on the King dream and its implications in 2000 on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Frank W. Hale Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave. On Jan. 15, Fred Hord, director of Black Studies at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., will discuss education implications in 2000 at 7 p.m. at the Hale Center. SEMINAR INVESTIGATES LIVING LONGER WITH NEW HIV TREATMENTS--Jan. 16. Thanks to new treatments, people with HIV are living longer. But can patients keep up with the rigors of the complex and expensive treatments? James O. Prochaska, director of the Cancer Prevention Research Consortium at the University of Rhode Island, is the first speaker in a 15-part HIV/AIDS Research Seminar Series. The interdisciplinary program, organized by university faculty, presents national experts in HIV/AIDS and health promotion.
