BOARD ACCEPTS ENDOWED FUNDS, APPROVES APPOINTMENTS COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees on Friday (3/6) accepted 13 new named endowed funds, approved several appointments and conducted miscellaneous business. Board accepts 13 new named endowed funds Trustees heard a report from Jerry May, vice president for development, on fund-raising efforts, including the establishment of the Center for Education and Economic Development Support Fund. Gifts of $426,929 were received from many individuals, companies and organizations to fund construction, operating expenses and program support for the Center for Education and Economic Development at the university’s Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster, Ohio. May also reported the establishment of 12 new named endowed funds with gifts totaling more than $885,000: -- Los Angeles Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund, $17,521, to provide merit scholarships for graduates of greater Los Angeles area high schools. -- Shelby County Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund, $15,040, to provide scholarships for Shelby County High School graduates. -- The Feder Cardiac Research Fund, $200,000, to support the advancement of medical knowledge in the field of cardiology. -- The Helen A. Freyman Scholarship Fund in Nursing, $162,342. -- The Medical Research Endowment Trust Fund, $149,095, to support research in the Medical Research Facility. -- The Fred Brown Fund for Research in Psychology, $90,000. -- The William A. and Mildred C. Korb Endowed Fund, $51,499, to provide scholarships for orphans or foster care children or for financially needy graduates of St. John’s High School in Delphos, Ohio. -- The Ralph Davis and Anna K. Davis Endowed Scholarship Fund, $50,000, to provide scholarships for graduates of high schools in Gallia County. -- The Wasserstrom Athletic Scholarship Fund, $50,000, to provide grant-in-aid scholarships in the Department of Athletics. -- The John E. Nelson Colloquium Endowed Fund, $40,098, to support a major visiting speakers program in the Department of Geography. -- The Robert E. Smart Scholarship Fund, $35,000, to provide scholarships for students living in the university’s cooperative scholarship housing. -- The Helen R. and Robert Murnane, M.D. Fund for Post-Graduate Awards in General Internal Medicine, $25,000. Appointments The board appointed President-designate William E. Kirwan as a professor of mathematics, effective July 1, 1998. Kirwan, appointed as Ohio State’s 12th president on Jan. 5, joined the University of Maryland, College Park’s mathematics faculty in 1964, rose through the faculty ranks and chaired the department from 1977 to 1981. He then was appointed vice chancellor for academic affairs and became president of Maryland in 1989. As a senior administrator, Kirwan continued to teach undergraduate classes. Trustees also appointed John W. Roberts as chair of the Department of African-American and African Studies, effective Aug. 15, 1998 through Sept. 30, 2002. Roberts, a professor of English, teaches African-American literature and folklore, American fiction and folklore, and folklore theory. He is the author of From Trickster to Badman: The Black Folk Hero in Slavery and Freedom and From Hucklebuck to Hip: Social Dance in the African American Community in Philadelphia. The board also appointed Virginia M. Trethewey, vice president for legal affairs and general counsel, to the Board of Directors of the Jack Nicklaus Museum Inc. The museum is to be built on land leased by Ohio State to the museum. Reappointments Trustees reappointed the following chairpersons. Bedford of UPPER ARLINGTON, chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science. -- Stuart H. Zweben of DUBLIN, chair of the Department of Computer and Information Science. -- Yuan F. Zheng of UPPER ARLINGTON, chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering. -- Richard A. Miller of POWELL, chair of the Department of Industrial, Welding and Systems Engineering. Trustees reappointed F. Dominic Dottavio of WALDO as dean and director of The Ohio State University at Marion, effective July 1, 1998 through June 30, 2003.
