UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY HELPS RACE FOR THE CURE--May 16. OSU students, faculty, staff and friends are part of the Columbus Race for the Cure, a 5K run/walk to benefit programs to eradicate breast cancer. Graduate students in a College of Education course organized a massive registration rally on May 7 to encourage the campus to join the race. Among the racers: Women's Basketball Coach Beth Burns and many team members. The Columbus Race for the Cure is one of 86 races nationwide presented by the Susan G. Komen Foundation. FESTIVAL CELEBRATES AFRICAN AMERICAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO ART--through May 16. Political activist Chuck D, lead vocalist for the group Public Enemy, will speak Friday at 7 p.m. in Mershon Auditorium, 1871 N. High St., as part of Ohio State's African American Heritage Festival. Building on the theme "African Americans Celebrating and Creating Legacies in Art," the festival is a celebration of African American contributions in art. The week-long festival culminates on Saturday with an outdoor festival featuring gospel, music, poetry, jazz and a fashion show, from noon-7 p.m. on the west lawn of the Ohio Union. Neighbor to Neighbor: A Children's Cultural Festival is the theme for Family Day, noon-4 p.m. at the Wexner Center, 15th Avenue and High Street. This Family Day features a sampler of art activities for children ages 4-12 and their families that represent the rich range of diverse cultural traditions in our midst. ROBERTA COOPER RAMO WILL ADDRESS LAW GRADUATES--May 16. Roberta Cooper Ramo, the first woman president of the American Bar Association, will be the speaker as graduates of the College of Law receive their academic hoods. AH, THE SWEET PERFUME OF WET DOG--May 16. The Omega Tau Sigma veterinary fraternity holds its annual dog wash from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Vet Hospital, 601 Vernon L. Tharp St. The canine cleaning cost is $10 for a large (over 25 lb.) dog, $8 for a small or second dog. Well-behaved dogs get treats. Proceeds benefit the Capital Area Humane Society. The Ohio State University Electric Race Car Team will compete at the Indianapolis Raceway Park for the 12-lap, 8.23-mile Indy Electrical Classic. Seth Taylor, 23, will sub as driver for his father Craig, who has a previous commitment. Taylor, a senior at The University of Texas, began his racing career at age 12 and has had many successes. The race will be broadcast live on ESPN2 at approximately 10 p.m. The Smokin' Buckeye is currently the most successful car in the series with a record number of race wins and pole positions and the winner of the last two series championships. OHIO STATE WATER TOWER IS COMING DOWN--The Ohio State water tower visible from Route 315 is being dismantled to make room for soccer fields and extend Fred Taylor Drive to Ackerman Road. Commuters may notice sparks flying at the site next week as crews use cutting torches to weaken the 190-foot tower. A crane is expected to arrive on May 18 to take apart the empty 500,000- gallon structure. Built in 1964 to improve campus water pressure, the tank hasn't been used for several years. After being dismantled by Pittsburg (correct) Tank & Tower Co. Inc. of Henderson, Ky., the tank will be stored until a buyer can be found. CONTACT: David Sweet, Physical Facilities, 292-2377. TWILIGHT OUTDOOR CONCERTS IN AMPHITHEATER--May 21, 28. The School of Music presents free outdoor concerts at one of the campus' most picturesque settings: Browning Amphitheater next to Mirror Lake. The University Jazz Lab Ensemble, directed by Phared Whited, will perform on May 21. The University Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ted McDaniel, will perform on May 28. The Ohio State University Theatre Company presents Vaclav Havel's The Memorandum, a satirical commentary on the bureaucracy, in Stadium II Theater, Drake Union.
