YOUTH CONFERENCE FOCUSES ON COMMUNITY SERVICE--June 17-19. Teens will sew coats for the homeless children and take animals to a nursing home to discover the power of community service during the 82nd Ohio 4-H Youth Expo. The annual conference, held on the Columbus campus of Ohio State University, will provide more than 450 4-H teens with a chance to learn about a particular subject, participate in a related service project and take home strategies for initiating similar activities. On Thursday, June 18, the 4-Hers participate in small group, all-day workshops on topics including clowning, edible flowers, ATV safety and pet therapy. The next day, the same groups will perform community services that incorporate materials from Thursday’s workshops -- such as clowning for patients at OSU Medical Center; building wheelchair gardens at First Community Village; building ATV trails at a nearby state park; and taking dogs to visit residents at a Columbus-area retirement village. Another group of teens will sew coats for homeless children. Conference delegates also will tour campus, experience college life by staying in student dorms and take part in a variety of recreational and social events.
