8-14-98 CHALMERS WYLIE HAD STRONG TIES TO THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY COLUMBUS -- Chalmers P. Wylie, former U.S. Congressman and adjunct professor in the School of Public Policy and Management at The Ohio State University, passed away suddenly this morning. "Congressman Wylie was a long and dear friend of mine and the university. He was without a doubt one of Ohio's true statesmen," said Michael Colley, vice chair of the Board of Trustees. "All of those who knew him will miss him greatly. His work for the citizens of Ohio and, in particular, for higher education in the halls of Congress was exemplary. After retiring from Congress in 1993, Congressman Wylie continued to share his knowledge of Congress and federal policy-making with graduate students and faculty. He will be sadly missed." Through an endowed fund created by gifts from Congressman Wylie and friends, the university's Board of Trustees established the Chalmers P. Wylie Scholarship for Public Service in 1993 in honor of his grandchildren, Bryan Wylie, Pamela Poston and Tamara Poston. Fund-raising efforts coordinated by U.S. District Court Judge George C. Smith significantly enhanced the fund in recent years. The award is presented annually to a first-year graduate student in the school's M.P.A. program in recognition of the recipient's academic achievement, leadership potential and commitment to public service. Wylie studied at Ohio State, but left school two quarters shy of graduation to enlist in the U.S. Army. After World War II, he earned a law degree at Harvard University. In 1993, Ohio State honored Congressman Wylie with its Distinguished Service Award for his commitment to the university and the people of Ohio. The university will follow a proclamation declared today by Gov. George V. Voinovich to fly all flags at half-staff. # Contact: William J.
