KIDS’ ARTWORK ON DISPLAY--Aug. 17-28. Elephant, giraffe and ostrich sculptures and other works of art by summer art workshop participants ranging in ages from 6-16 will be on display through Friday (8/28) at the Hopkins Hall Gallery, 128 North Oval Mall. The children, who took part in the Wexner Center Summer Youth Workshops, worked individually and in groups throughout the summer with practicing artists and educators to create paintings, Web site visuals, computer animation and nature sculptures. COLLEGE OF LAW STUDENTS BEGIN NEW ACADEMIC YEAR. A group of 215 first- year law students joined some 400 second- and third-year students Wednesday (8/19) to begin a new academic year in The Ohio State University College of Law. APPLES, BANANAS OR CARROTS? LEARN THE ABCs OF HEALTHFUL SNACKING--Aug. 25. Juggling busy schedules often makes it difficult for families to eat as healthfully as they would like. On Tuesday (8/25) from noon to 1 p.m. in room 122 Oxley Hall, 1712 Neil Ave., Ohio State University human nutritionist Mary Kerschel will discuss how to choose healthful snacks for children and examine the importance of these snacks in their development. The seminar is part of the Faculty and Staff Wellness Program, which offers a series of free lunch-hour educational programs during the summer quarter. CONTACT: Wellness Program, 293-WELL (9355).

CITY CLEANS UP AFTER SUMMER STUDENT MOVE-OUT--Aug. 24-Sept. 2. The City of Columbus Refuse Collection Division will conduct a special bulk collection in the predominantly student neighborhood around The Ohio State University from Aug. 24 through Sept. 2. In addition, a one-day collection will be held on Wednesday (8/26) of reusable furniture and other household items for persons who are homeless and for those who are marginally housed in Ohio. This special bulk collection coincides with the annual “move-out” of students at the end of the university’s summer quarter. The collection is being coordinated by the city, the university and neighborhood leaders as part of an ongoing effort to keep the streets and alleys of the University District clean. GREAT ISLAND TOUR – F.T. STONE LABORATORY ON GIBRALTAR ISLAND HOLDS OPEN HOUSE--Aug. 29. The F.T. Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island, Put-in-Bay, will host an open house on Saturday (8/29) from noon-4 p.m. to showcase the programs and research projects conducted at the lab. Activities will include self-guided bicycle tours of South Bass Island and an open house and tour of the South Bass lighthouse. F.T. Stone Laboratory, located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, is the Lake Erie research and teaching laboratory for the Ohio Sea Grant College Program, and is the oldest freshwater biological field station and research laboratory in the United States. The open house event is also part of Coastweeks ’98, a national three-week celebration of waters and shorelines. Coastweeks runs from Aug. 29 through Sept. 21 and includes a variety of recreational, educational and environmental opportunities coordinated by the Ohio Lake Erie Office. The goal of Ohio’s program is to increase the awareness of the value and fragility of Lake Erie. The theme, “I Can Help Lake Erie,” encourages Ohioans to be a part of the solution, not the pollution that finds its way into the lake.
