MUMS, CABBAGE AND KALE FOR SALE--Sept. 4-5. Several varieties of mums, cabbage and kale will be on sale today until 7 p.m. and Saturday (9/5) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Chadwick Arboretum’s 6th Annual Founder’s Day Sale, on the lawn of Dakan Hall, 674 W. Lane Ave. The plants cost between $5 and $20. All proceeds of the sale will benefit the operations and programs of The Ohio State University Chadwick Arboretum.

STC PRESIDENT TO BE ANNOUNCED--Sept. 8. The Science and Technology Campus Corporation at The Ohio State University will introduce its new president during a news conference at 10 a.m. Tuesday (9/8) at the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce, 37 N. High St. The university’s Board of Trustees in December 1997 approved development of the Science and Technology Campus (STC), which will house technology-based companies and businesses producing products and services derived from Ohio State research. The STC is a free-standing, not-for-profit corporation governed by a Board of Directors composed of civic, business and university leaders. The board’s membership includes Ted Celeste, chair of the university’s Board of Trustees, and the STC board is chaired by Ohio State President William E. Kirwan. A majority of board members are drawn from the community. Celeste, Kirwan and Columbus Mayor Greg Lashutka will be among those attending the Tuesday event.

DISCOVERY CHANNEL PROGRAM TO FEATURE OHIO STATE PROFESSOR--Sept. 10. Ohio State University Natural Resources Professor William Mitsch will discuss Ohio State Wetlands on the Discovery Channel’s Cutting Edge Technology Report: Eco-Restoration Today program, which will air Thursday (9/10) at 7 a.m.

STUDENT AFFAIRS PERSONNEL HOLD OPENING RALLY--Sept. 10. Food, volleyball, balloons, croquet and a dunk tank will be on hand as the Office of Student Affairs holds a kickoff rally Thursday (9/10) from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Drake Union, 1849 Cannon Drive, to jump-start staff members for the upcoming academic year. David Williams, vice president for student and urban/community affairs, and members of The Ohio State University Board of Trustees will give remarks in Thurber Theatre beginning at 1:15 p.m.

ROADS SCHOLARS ON TOUR--Sept. 10-11, 17-18. Two busloads of Ohio State faculty, many new to the university, will be traveling through southwest Ohio (9/10-11) and south-central Ohio (9/17-18) to get a firsthand look at how some of their colleagues are working with Ohio businesses. Called the Roads Scholars tours, the trips are sponsored by The Ohio State University President’s Council for Outreach and Engagement, a group formed three years ago to encourage Ohio State’s outreach with Ohioans. Among the newest Buckeye faculty members is President William E. Kirwan, who will participate in a portion of each tour. The first tour includes the following stops: Rothschild Berry Farm, Urbana; Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center, Wilberforce; Warren Correctional Facility, Lebanon; Valley Vineyard Winery, Morrow; Reception, dinner, program with Young Scholars, Cincinnati Marriott; Two Cincinnati high schools, Hughes Center and Princeton; AK Steel, Middletown; and Iams Company, Dayton. UNIVERSITY CAMPAIGN TO HOST EVENT ON THE OVAL--Sept. 11. The Ohio State University Campaign, “Affirm Thy Friendship,” will hold a special event Friday (9/11) on the Oval. A reception will begin at 7:15 p.m. and will be followed at 8 p.m. by special campaign announcements, including remarks on the impact of the university’s current campaign by President William E. Kirwan. A dramatic lighting scenario will follow at 8:30 p.m. The marching band, cheerleaders and Brutus Buckeye will perform before some 1,500 alumni, friends, students, faculty, staff and other supporters of the university. Press parking will be available behind Orton Hall, 155 South Oval Drive.

ROY STEIN NAMED TO GREAT LAKES FISHERIES COMMISSION -- President Clinton has appointed Roy A. Stein, director of the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory at Ohio State, to the Great Lakes Fisheries Commission. The White House announced the appointment Sept. 1. An internationally recognized expert on the interactions of fish species, Stein has served on the commission’s Board of Technical Experts since 1990 and as its chair for the past two years. The commission was established in 1956. It researches and implements measures to control the sea lamprey population, and works with the U.S. states and Canadian provinces of the Great Lakes regions to ensure that the lakes are amply stocked with lake trout and salmon. There are four Canadian commissioners and four U.S. commissioners and an alternate.
