ALUMNI GROUPS REUNITE FOR FOOTBALL FESTIVITIES--Sept. 12.
Alumni of many colleges and interest groups return to Columbus
each year to renew ties and enjoy a few hours at the ‘shoe. The

THE JOYS AND SORROWS OF KIDS AND TEAM SPORTS--Sept. 14. The fall
season allows several opportunities for children to participate
in team sports. On Monday (9/14) at 6:30 p.m. at the Ohio State
Center for Wellness and Prevention, 2050 Kenny Rd., Ohio State
University Hospitals registered nurse Joseph Yednock will offer
practical tips for organizing schedules, dealing with
disappointment on and off the field, and how to maximize the
healthy experiences sports can offer.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATORS OUTLINE PLANS FOR NEW SCHOOL YEAR--
Sept. 15.
Autumn quarter classes for nearly 50,000 students begin Wednesday
(9/23). Students will be moving into residence halls and off-
campus housing, participating in Welcome Week activities and
taking care of last minute details before classes begin. We will
hold a news availability with the administrators responsible for
major elements of the school year at 10 a.m. in 101 Student
Affairs Building, 33 W. 11th Ave. Administrators who oversee
parking, residence halls, admissions, financial aid, academic
affairs and student affairs will be available for interview at
this informal event. This is your best chance to meet and
interview these people prior to the opening of school since they
are quite busy and may not be able to honor all requests from
news organizations for individual interviews.

HONORS PROGRAM AWARDED FOR WORK WITH “ADOPTED” SCHOOL--Sept. 15.
The Ohio State University Honors Center’s Adopt-A-School
partnership with Indianola Middle School will receive an award
for exceptional service to the children of Columbus from the
Columbus Board of Education. The award will be presented at the
beginning of the school board’s meeting Tuesday (9/15) at
5 p.m. in the board’s offices, 270 E. State St. Now in its fifth
year, the Adopt-A-School project allows some 248 Ohio State
honors students to volunteer one hour per week throughout the
academic year to tutor and teach math, reading, writing, science,
social studies and music to sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders
at Indianola.

CIC TECHFORUM98 TO BE BROADCAST LIVE ON THE INTERNET--Sept. 15-
16. The Committee on Institutional Cooperation in Champaign,
Ill., will broadcast its TechForum98 in real time over the
Internet using RealVideo/Real Audio technology Tuesday (9/15)
from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday (9/16) from 8:30 a.m. to 3
p.m. Central Time. The forum will focus on information
technology developments, projects and plans for the upcoming
year. The broadcast is being produced by Ohio State, a leader in
the development and use of Internet broadcasting technology. The
broadcast can be viewed at

KOREA CARAVAN MAKES MERSHON CENTER STOP -- Sept. 17. Donald P.
Gregg, former U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, will be
the featured speaker at the Korea Economic Institute of America's
Korea Caravan. The topic of the seminar is "Rebirth of the
Tiger: Korea's Economic Rebound." The event will take place from
2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday (9/17) in room 120 of the Mershon
Center, 1501 Neil Ave.

ROADS SCHOLARS ON TOUR--Sept. 17-18. Two busloads of Ohio State
faculty, many new to the university, will be traveling through
south-central Ohio (9/17-18) to get a firsthand look at how some
of their colleagues are working with Ohio businesses. Called the
Roads Scholars tours, the trips are sponsored by The Ohio State
University President’s Council for Outreach and Engagement, a
group formed three years ago to encourage Ohio State’s
outreach with Ohioans. Among the newest Buckeye faculty members
is President William E. Kirwan, who will participate in a portion
of the tour. The tour includes the following stops: Mead Fine
Paper Division, Chillicothe; Piketon Research and Extension
Center, Piketon; MACA Plastics, Winchester; Fort Ancient,
Oregonia; Murphy Theater, Wilmington; Peterson Farm, Fayette
County; YUSA Corporation and OSU Extension, Washington Court
House.

STUDENTS WELCOMED WITH WEEK OF ACTIVATES--Sept. 20-26. Nearly
50,000 students return to campus beginning Sunday (9/20) as Ohio
State begins a new academic year. Welcome Week is a series of
activities and programs designed to welcome and introduce
faculty, staff and school traditions to new and returning
students to Ohio State. Welcome Week will include more events
than last year as a result of efforts to continue to improve the
student experience at Ohio State. Among the many Welcome Week
activities:
Sunday (9/20)- Residence Halls move-in.
Monday (9/21)- Community Commitment, where some 1,000 students
are expected to volunteer throughout the Columbus community in
various service-learning projects.
Tuesday (9/22)- The President’s Convocation at St. John Arena,
where President Kirwan, vice presidents, faculty members and
student leaders will be introduced to freshmen and new students.
The convocation will be followed by the President’s Picnic on the
Oval.
Wednesday (9/23)- Classes begin.
Thursday (9/24)- Scarlet Fever pep rally at St. John Arena.
Saturday (9/25)- Street fair on High Street.

FARM SCIENCE REVIEW--Sept. 22-24. The three-day Farm Science
Review offers an estimated 125,000 people a look at some of the
newest innovations in agriculture, nutrition and gardening. The
review is held at the Molly Caren Agricultural Center, located 30
miles west of Columbus on U.S. 40 near London. From 8 a.m. to 5
p.m. each day, visitors can see displays by some 600 agricultural
exhibitors and attend some of the more than 100 educational
demonstrations and presentations. The educational programs
feature information on everything from cancer prevention, stress
reduction and healthy eating tips to fruit trees, flowers and
farm safety.
