PUBLIC INVITED TO THE LAUNCH OF THE NEXT VENTURE IN JOHN GLENN’S
LONG PUBLIC SERVICE CAREER

COLUMBUS -- U.S. Sen. John Glenn will make one of his only
public appearances prior to his space shuttle flight at The Ohio
State University on Friday, Sept. 18 for the official
announcement of the creation of the planned John Glenn Institute
for Public Service and Public Policy.

“John Glenn is an authentic American hero,” said Ohio State
President William E. Kirwan. “He models the behavior and
possesses the qualities that are essential to the successful
conduct of public affairs at the national, state and local
levels. The John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public
Policy at The Ohio State University will motivate future leaders
and inform policy decisions for decades to come. We would like
to invite all Ohioans to join us in launching the next great
venture in Senator Glenn’s remarkable career of public service --
a career that has already spanned nearly one-third of the
nation’s history.”

Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, is scheduled
to return to space in late October aboard the space shuttle
Discovery in order to conduct experiments on the process of aging
in the human body.

The public announcement of the planned Glenn Institute will
be at 2 p.m. in Independence Hall on the Ohio State campus.
Details concerning the goals and scope of activities of the
institute will be released at that time.

There will be a news conference following the public
announcement, and then Senator Glenn will conduct a policy
roundtable discussion involving about 20 students and faculty members.
