ROADS SCHOLARS ON TOUR--Sept. 17-18. Two busloads of Ohio State faculty, many new to the university, will be traveling through south-central Ohio today and Friday to get a firsthand look at how some of their colleagues are working with Ohio businesses. Called the Roads Scholars tours, the trips are sponsored by The
Ohio State University President’s Council for Outreach and Engagement, a group formed three years ago to encourage Ohio State’s outreach with Ohioans. Among the newest Buckeye faculty members is President William E. Kirwan, who will participate in a portion of the tour. The tour includes the following stops: Mead Fine Paper Division, Chillicothe; Piketon Research and Extension Center, Piketon; MACA Plastics, Winchester; Fort Ancient,
Oregonia; Murphy Theatre, Wilmington; Peterson Farm, Fayette County; YUSA Corporation and OSU Extension, Washington Court House.

PUBLIC INVITED TO THE LAUNCH OF THE NEXT VENTURE IN JOHN GLENN’S LONG PUBLIC SERVICE CAREER--Sept. 18. U.S. Sen. John Glenn, making one of his only public appearances prior to his space shuttle flight, will visit The Ohio State University on Friday (9/18) for the official announcement of the creation of the planned John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy. The public announcement of the planned Glenn Institute will be at 2 p.m. in Independence Hall, 1923 Neil Ave. Details concerning the goals and scope of activities of the institute will be released at that time. There will be a news conference with Senator Glenn and President Kirwan from 2:30 to 3 p.m. in Independence Hall.

USAC TO HOLD PEP RALLY FOR OHIO STATE STAFF MEMBERS--Sept. 18. Andy Geiger, assistant vice president and director of athletics, Brutus Buckeye and cheerleaders will be on hand to launch the academic year for Ohio State staff members at a pep rally Friday (9/18) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ohio Union North
Terrace Patio, 1739 N. High St. There will be food, music and free prizes. The event is sponsored by the University Staff Advisory Committee.

STUDENTS WELCOMED WITH WEEK OF ACTIVITIES--Sept. 20-26. Some 48,500 students return to campus beginning Sunday (9/20) as Ohio State begins a new academic year. Welcome Week is a series of
activities and programs designed to welcome and introduce faculty, staff and school traditions to new and returning students to Ohio State. Welcome Week will include more events than last year as a result of efforts to continue to improve the student experience at Ohio State. Among the many Welcome Week activities:
Sunday (9/20)- Residence Halls move-in. Nearly half of the 8,150 dormitory residents are expected on Sunday. The remainder are in by Tuesday. To help with the move-in process, at least 1,000 student volunteers, called OWLS or “Orientation Welcome Leaders,” will help unload cars and help cart student belongings into the
residence halls.
Monday (9/21)- At least 1,200 students are expected on the West Lawn of the Ohio Union at 9 a.m. to take part in “Community Commitment,” through which participants perform two hours of community service at sites throughout the city.
Tuesday (9/22)- The President’s Convocation, at 11 a.m. in St. John Arena, features a colorful processional of faculty in academic regalia. President Kirwan, vice presidents, faculty members and student leaders will be introduced to freshmen and new students. The marching band will then lead the students to the Oval for the president’s picnic and Buckeye Bash from noon-2:30 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., students play a squad of Ohio State and
Columbus area celebrities at Vice President for Student and Urban/Community Affairs David Williams’ Softball Challenge at the Ohio State Women’s Softball Field, next to the Woody Hayes Athletic Facility.
Wednesday (9/23)- Classes begin.
Thursday (9/24)- Scarlet Fever pep rally, at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena, introduces students to Ohio State traditions,
including Brutus Buckeye, the marching band, sports teams and cheerleaders.
Friday (9/25)- The Second City, the Chicago-based comedy troupe that launched careers for many well-known comedians, gives a free performance from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Mershon Auditorium.
Saturday (9/26)- A street fair on High Street with music, food, vendors and carnival-like games and activities, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. High Street will be closed to traffic from 12th to 16th avenues from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.; 15th Avenue will be closed at Pearl Alley, except for access to Long’s Bookstore.

FARM SCIENCE REVIEW--Sept. 22-24. The three-day Farm Science Review offers an estimated 125,000 people a look at some of the newest innovations in agriculture, nutrition and gardening. The review is held at the Molly Caren Agricultural Center, located 30 miles west of Columbus on U.S. 40 near London. From 8 a.m. to 5
p.m. each day, visitors can see displays by some 600 agricultural exhibitors and attend some of the more than 100 educational demonstrations and presentations. The educational programs feature information on everything from cancer prevention, stress reduction and healthy eating tips to fruit trees, flowers and farm safety.

PREVENTING SPORTS INJURIES IN KIDS--Sept. 24 and 28. The fall season allows several opportunities for children to participate in team sports. On Thursday (9/24) at 6:30 p.m. at the Ohio State Center for Wellness and Prevention, 2050 Kenny Road., Ohio State University Hospitals sports medicine specialist Doug Diorio will
offer practical tips for preventing and treating injuries. The Monday (9/28) class will be held at 7 p.m. at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore, 3685 W. Dublin-Granville Road. Both classes are free but registration is required. To register, call 293-5123.

OHIO STATE MARCHING BAND RELEASES 23rd RECORDING--From the powerful opening of the Star Wars Main Title Theme to the vocal rendition of the Navy Hymn, the sonorous sounds of the world’s largest all-brass band, The Ohio State University Marching Band, is now available on compact disc or cassette. The 23rd commercial recording release of the marching band, “Buckeye Blockbusters,” contains school songs, jazz, pop and classical performances and is available at various bookstores around the Ohio State campus and throughout Columbus.
