Appointments, reappointments

Trustees appointed John M. Stang of REYNOLDSBURG, associate
professor in the College of Medicine and Public Health, to the
Harry C. and Mary Elizabeth Powelson Professorship in Medicine,
effective through Sept. 30, 2002. The Powelson Professorship was
established in 1976 with a bequest from alumnus Harry C. Powelson
to support a faculty position in the College of Medicine and
Public Health to provide tutorial services for worthy and needy
medical students.

The board also appointed James C. Williams, currently
general manager of the materials and process engineering
department for GE Aircraft Engines in Cincinnati, to the Honda
Chair for Transportation in the Department of Materials Science
and Engineering. The appointment will be effective March 1,
1999. The Honda Chair for Transportation was established in
February 1997 to promote and support teaching and research in
transportation-related technology in the College of Engineering.

The board reappointed W. James Harper of GALENA to the J.T.
“Stubby” Parker Chair in Dairy Foods in the Department of Food
Science and Technology, effective through Sept. 30, 2002. A fund
for the Parker Chair was created in 1990 with gifts from Thomas
L. Parker in memory of his father, J.T. “Stubby” Parker. The
chair supports a professor whose work focuses on stimulating new
research into the chemical, microbial or engineering phases of
the dairy foods industry.

Trustees approve construction work

Trustees authorized the university to hire architects and
engineers and seek bids for two projects on the Columbus campus.
Trustees also awarded construction contracts for a University
Extension building on the Lima campus.

Renovation of part of the second floor of Johnson Laboratory
will accommodate the relocation of the macromolecular X-ray
laboratory from Rightmire Hall. Funding for the $1.1 million
project is being shared by the state and several university
colleges and offices.

At Larkins Hall, two previously approved roofing projects
are being rolled into one in order to minimize disruption to
users of the building and facilitate the work. Old material will
be removed and new insulated roofing panels and flashing will be
installed at a cost of $1 million, to be funded by the state.

Trustees also awarded construction contracts to build a $1.3
million building on the Lima campus. The 14,000-square-foot,
single-story facility with meeting room will house University
Extension and the Allen County Farm Services Agency. Funding for
the project is coming from the Lima campus and a university loan,
with loan payments to be made by lease revenue from the county
agency. The building is expected to be completed by February.
