HUNTINGTON NAMED VISITING SCHOLAR AT OXFORD
COLUMBUS -- Susan L. Huntington, dean of The Ohio State
University Graduate School and vice provost for graduate studies,
will spend eight weeks this fall as a visiting scholar at Oxford
University in London.
Huntington, Distinguished University Professor and professor of
art, has been named the Numata Visitor in Buddhist Studies at Oxford’s
Balliol College. The position is endowed by the Numata Foundation of
Japan. Huntington begins lecturing at Oxford Oct. 13.
An authority on the art of India, Huntington will deliver one
lecture and a seminar each week. The theme of her presentations is
“Reconsidering the Early Buddhist Art of India.” She also will lecture
at the Institute of Archaeology in London and at the University of
London. Huntington is working on her fourth book on the art of ancient
India, this one on early Buddhist art. Her current research departs
from a century of scholarship on issues in Buddhist studies, such as the
debate on the origin of the Buddha image. Huntington’s work also
focuses on issues of scholarly evidence, proof, and personal and
cultural biases that affect scholarly inquiry.
The winner of Ohio State’s Distinguished Scholar Award in 1985,
she has earned more than 50 grants and fellowships, including a 1983
Guggenheim Award, three Fulbright awards, and grants from the National
Endowment for the Humanities and the Smithsonian Institution. She
joined the Ohio State faculty in 1972.
Huntington was appointed dean of Ohio State’s graduate school
and vice provost in 1996 after serving a year as interim dean and vice
provost. During Huntington’s stay in Oxford, Susan Reeser at the
Graduate School will serve as contact person for the dean (292-6031;
Reeser.1@osu.edu). Associate Dean William A.T. Clark will have
signature authority in the Graduate School.
