HOMECOMING WEEK--through Oct. 17. Show me the Buckeyes is the theme for 1998 homecoming activities. Events for the remainder of the week include:
Today (10/16)--The Celebration of Students continues with an administrative, faculty and student leadership event through 3 p.m. at Raney Commons, 47 Curl Drive. A Cultural Extravaganza will be held on the Oval with performances at Browning Amphitheatre, along with a Study Abroad fair at Oxley Hall, 1712 Neil Ave., through 3 p.m. A homecoming court reunion banquet will be held at the Buckeye Hall of Fame from 6:30 p.m. to midnight, celebrating the homecoming courts of 1948, ’58, ’68, ’78, ’88 and ’98.
Saturday (10/17)--The traditional homecoming parade, featuring floats, the homecoming court and some 80 other entries, will begin at 9 a.m. at 17th and Neil avenues. President William E. Kirwan and his wife, Patty Kirwan, will be the grand marshals. They will lead the parade east on 17th Avenue, south on High Street, and west on 12th Avenue to end at 12th and Neil avenues. The homecoming game pits the Ohio State Buckeyes against the Minnesota Gophers, with kickoff at 12:10 p.m.

RALPH NADER TO SPEAK AT ERGONOMICS OPEN HOUSE--Oct. 16. The Institute for Ergonomics will hold an open house today (10/16) beginning at 11 a.m. in 140 Baker Systems, 1971 Neil Ave. Consumer advocate Ralph Nader will give a free, public presentation on “Human-Centered Design and Ergonomics” at 1:30 p.m. in Independence Hall, 1923 Neil Ave. The institute consolidates efforts of faculty who are working to find safer, productive ways for people to work.

NEW PAVILION TO AID WILDLIFE OBSERVATION AT OHIO STATE WETLAND PARK--Oct. 16. Visitors to The Ohio State University Olentangy River Wetland Research Park, 352 Dodridge Road., will soon get a better look at the wildlife living there thanks to a new two-story observation tower that will be completed next summer. Ground-breaking ceremonies and an open house will be held today (10/16) from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Phase 1 of the site development, featuring two 2.5-acre deep-water marshes and a river water delivery system, was completed in 1994. Phases 2 and 3, involving construction of additional wetlands and a research and education building, are under way.

BODY FIT AND WISE--Oct. 19. Women who want to achieve fitness don’t have to look like supermodels or body builders, says Ohio State University Medical Center exercise physiologist Katy Hamtak. On Monday (10/19) at 7 p.m. at Barnes and Noble Bookstore, 3685 W. Dublin-Granville Road, Hamtak will discuss fitness routines that can help people individually achieve realistic personal goals. The program is part of the Health for Life programs and classes offered by the Ohio State University Medical Center. To register, call 293-5123.

OHIO STATE JOINS COLLEGES NATIONWIDE TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST ALCOHOL-RELATED DEATHS AND TRAGEDIES--Oct. 19. Members of The Ohio State University Get Real Alcohol Coalition will gather Monday (10/19) at 2 p.m. on the Oval to speak out against alcohol-related deaths and tragedies on college campuses nationwide. The “Not Here” event is nationally coordinated at more than 800 college campuses to kick off the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week in which administrators, faculty, students and community members join to build healthier and safer campuses. The Get Real coalition is a group of campus and community members that works to reduce the incidence of alcohol and drug problems in the neighborhood adjacent to and on the Columbus campus.

FISHER COLLEGE CELEBRATES DEDICATION--Oct. 20-21. The Fisher College of Business will hold dedication events Tuesday and Wednesday (10/20-21). A free, public symposium at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Mershon Auditorium, 1871 N. High St., will feature speeches by international trade expert Carla Hills and Peter Ueberroth, former Major League Baseball commissioner, and remarks by Joseph A. Alutto, dean of the Fisher College, and Leslie H. Wexner, founder, president and chairman of the board of The Limited, Inc. A media section will be designated, and a mult box and lighting will be provided. At 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Max M. Fisher, Wexner, Alutto and President William E. Kirwan will participate in an interactive stock purchase at Gerlach Hall. Media wishing to cover the interactive program will need to be in place by 9 a.m. and should call Emily Caldwell at University Communications, 292-8309, by noon Monday (10/19) for information on media arrangements. The dedication ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday at an outdoor stage area assembled between Fisher and Gerlach halls. The festivities include a performance by the marching band, a variety of presentations, and remarks by President Kirwan, Board of Trustees Chair Ted Celeste, Wexner and Alutto. Gov. George V. Voinovich also is scheduled to appear. On Wednesday, media parking will be available beside the ROTC Building in the lot at Tuttle Park Place and Lane Avenue. Please use your OSU media parking permit for access. Lighting and a mult box will be provided during the dedication ceremony. A media availability with some ceremony participants is planned immediately following the dedication, at approximately 11:30 a.m.

DAN QUAYLE TO VISIT OHIO STATE--Oct. 21. Former Vice President Dan Quayle will make a non- political speaking appearance Wednesday (10/21) at 7:30 p.m. at the Ohio Union Ballrooms, 1739 N. High St. Quayle will present “Standing Firm,” his personal motto. The lecture is part of the Ohio and Drake Union Activities Board (ODUA) fall lecture series, and details Quayle’s experiences as the 44th vice president. Tickets are $5 and are available at the Ohio Union newsstand and at Ticketmaster locations.

SPACE WEEK CELEBRATION TO BE ANNOUNCED--Oct. 22. President William E. Kirwan will be joined by other Ohio State administrators and faculty during a news conference at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the second-floor lobby of Bricker Hall, 190 N. Oval Mall, to announce the university’s Space Week celebration plans. Space Week will be a series of campus events designed to acknowledge U.S. Sen. John Glenn’s contributions to the country and highlight Ohio State space-related research. The events will coincide with shuttle Discovery’s nine-day mission. Also present at the news conference will be Ed Ray, interim senior vice president and provost; William Baeslack, interim vice president for research; and several faculty engaged in space-related research, with displays and exhibits illustrating their studies. The news conference is scheduled to conclude at 10:30 a.m. A mult box will be provided.

LEADERSHIP LECTURE AND RECEPTION--Oct. 23. The requirements for leadership in a new day will be discussed at the second annual Lena C. Bailey Leadership Lecture and Reception Friday (10/23) from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in room 200 Campbell Hall, 1787 Neil Ave. Joan Leitzel, president of the University of New Hampshire, will present “New Leadership for a New Day: What Does that Require?” A reception will follow in the Columbia Gas Student and Alumni Center of Campbell Hall. Both are free and open to the public, but reservations are required and can be made by calling 292-6761. The Lena C. Bailey Leadership Lecture is in memory of Bailey, former dean and professor emeritus, who served as a faculty member and an administrator for 35 years.

ANNUAL PARENTS WEEKEND FEATURES BRUNCH, TOURS--OCT. 23-25. Students and their families can go to class together, tour campus, and have Sunday brunch with President Kirwan during Parents Weekend Friday through Sunday (10/23-25). Friday, parents may attend classes with their students, search campus for “Hidden Treasures,” and then go to a 7 p.m. reception in Stecker Lounge in the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St. Saturday, parents can tour Ohio Stadium or the Woody Hayes Athletic Facility, and enjoy a night of Swing music in Raney Commons. Sunday, President Kirwan will join parents for brunch at 8 and 10 a.m. and noon in the Ohio Union ballrooms.

OHIO STATE HOLDS HIGH ON PRIDE UNIVERSITY DISTRICT CLEANUP--Oct. 24. Some 2,000 Ohio State students, faculty and staff will join neighborhood residents in the “High on Pride” University Community Cleanup on Saturday (10/24) from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will pick up litter, sweep streets and sidewalks, and collect recyclables in the neighborhood just east of campus. The area covers 250 blocks, 30 miles of sidewalk and more than 65 miles of roadway. The cleanup area is bounded on the north by Blake Avenue, the south by Ninth Avenue, the east by the Conrail tracks, and the west by North High Street and the campus. Volunteers register at the Wexner Center plaza at 15th Avenue and High Street.
