LEADERSHIP LECTURE AND RECEPTION--Oct. 23. The requirements for leadership in a new day will be discussed at the second annual Lena C. ANNUAL PARENTS WEEKEND FEATURES BRUNCH, TOURS--OCT. 23-25. Students and their families can go to class together, tour campus, and have Sunday brunch with President Kirwan during Parents Weekend today through Sunday (10/23-25). Today, parents may attend classes with their students, search campus for “Hidden Treasures,” and then go to a 7 p.m. reception in Stecker Lounge in the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St. Saturday, parents can tour Ohio Stadium and enjoy a night of swing music in Raney Commons. OHIO STATE STUDENTS FACULTY AND STAFF TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE--Oct. 24. Some 100 students, faculty and staff will travel to Evanston, Ill., to perform community service before the Ohio State football game against Northwestern as part of the National Make a Difference Day Saturday (10/24). Students will participate in trash cleanup and site revitalization, and volunteer at various community organizations such as shelters for people with HIV, the homeless, families, and battered women and children. OHIO STATE HOLDS HIGH ON PRIDE UNIVERSITY DISTRICT CLEANUP--Oct. 24. Some 2,000 Ohio State students, faculty and staff will join neighborhood residents in the “High on Pride” University Community Cleanup on Saturday (10/24) from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will pick up litter, sweep streets and sidewalks, and collect recyclables in the neighborhood just east of campus. The cleanup area is bounded on the north by Blake Avenue, the south by Ninth Avenue, the east by the Conrail tracks, and the west by North High Street and the campus. OHIO STATE CONTINUES URBAN OUTREACH--Oct. 26. President William E. Kirwan and university administrators will meet with community leaders at the “University-Community Dialogue on Urban Outreach,” Monday (10/26) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the African Studies and African-American Community Extension Center, 905 Mt. Vernon Ave. The discussion will focus on Ohio State’s outreach efforts and how the campus and city’s urban areas can work together in the future. CONTACT: Graylyn Swilley, 253-4620.
TELECONFERENCE EXAMINES GREEK LIFE AND HIGHER EDUCATION--Oct. 26. The roles and compatibility of greek life and higher education will be examined during a teleconference broadcast from Vermont Monday (10/26) from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Drake Union River Den, 1849 Cannon Drive. Panelists will discuss possibilities of redefining and revitalizing greek life at campuses around the country and the relevance for campuses which actively participate in planning for their greek communities. OHIO STATE HONORS U.S. SEN. JOHN GLENN’S RETURN TO SPACE WITH WEEK OF
ACTIVITIES--Oct. 26-Nov. 7. A series of campus lectures and symposia, a statewide rocket-launching
competition at Ohio Stadium, the John Glenn Fitness 5-K Run and live coverage of the Shuttle Discovery mission
highlight Space Week activities at Ohio State Monday (10/26) through Saturday (11/7). Space Week is a series of
campus events designed to acknowledge U.S. Sen. John Glenn’s contributions to the country and highlight Ohio
State space-related research. The events will coincide with shuttle Discovery’s nine-day mission and include:
Monday (10/26)--Kathryn Sullivan, former astronaut and president and CEO of the Center of Science and Industry,
will address “The Ups and Downs of an Oceanographer/Astronaut” in a speech as part of the Honors Conference on
Space at 7 p.m. in the Ohio Union Conference Theater, 1739 N. High St.
Friday (10/30)--Economics Nobel Laureate Douglass North of Washington University in St. Louis will discuss the
ability of the U.S. economy to finance space exploration from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Wexner Center, 1871 N. High St.
Saturday(10/31)--The John Glenn Fitness 5-K run begins at the north entrance of Ohio Stadium and will follow a
course adjacent to the Oval beginning at 8 a.m. Registration is $5 and begins at 7 a.m. the day of the race at the
stadium. Preregistration is available at 106 Larkins Hall, 337 W. 17th Ave., or by calling 292-7671. The John
Glenn Aerospace Invitational, a rocket-building and launching event, is expected to attract more than 400 children
from around the state from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Ohio Stadium. Water-fueled rockets will be used. Registration is
required by calling 292-6942.
Sunday(11/1)--The Rocket Rally on the Oval, where children ages 8 to 12 and families will build their own model
rockets, runs from noon to 4 p.m. Advance registration is required by calling 688-3334.
Monday(11/2)-- Ghassem Asrar, associate administrator for earth science for NASA, and Prasad Gogineni,
manager of NASA’s Polar Oceans and Ice Sheets Program, will discuss the commercialization of space at the
Columbus Rotary Club meeting from 11:45 a.m.-1:10 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Columbus. Lunch
is $10.25; call 221-3127 for reservations. Professor Lonnie Thompson, of the Department of Geological Sciences
and Byrd Polar Research Center, will present a University Distinguished Lecture on “Past and Current Global
Climate Change: Implications for Our Future” at 4 p.m. in the Wexner Center’s Film/Video Theater.
Tuesday (11/3) Hiroyuki Matsumiya of the Japanese Space Agency (NASDA) will visit Ohio State, as the guest
of the College of Biological Sciences. NASDA is funding OSU plant biology research aboard Discovery.
Matsumiya will give a public lecture on “Space Biology of Japan” at 4 p.m. in 209 Campbell Hall. A replica of

Saturday(11/7)--Bob Dixon, senior research engineer for emerging technologies in UTS, will discuss “Scientific
Search for Intelligent Life Outside of Earth” from 7 to 9 p.m. in Independence Hall Auditorium, 1923 Neil Ave.

SCHOTTENSTEIN CENTER CONDUCTS “FLUSH TEST” OF RESTROOM FIXTURES--Oct. 28. Some 500 faculty, staff and student volunteers will take part in a “flush test” of all the restroom fixtures in the Schottenstein Center at the corner of Lane Avenue and Olentangy River Road Wednesday (10/28) at 4 p.m. Participants will begin check in at 3:30 p.m. and be assigned a station. COLLEGE TEACHES RESPONSIBLE INVESTING--Oct. 29. T. Scott Wittman, an internationally known fund manager of Vantage Mutual Fund, will speak on "Socially Responsible Investing" Thursday (10/29) at 5 p.m. at the Columbia Gas Student and Alumni Center in Campbell Hall, 1787 Neil Ave. Wittman will discuss mutual fund investment strategies and the Partnership for Excellence in Financial Planning Education. The event is sponsored by the College of Human Ecology and Lincoln Financial Advisors and is free and open to the public.
